This Saturday (11th July) the Doncaster Rovers Youth Team will embark on a trip to Sweden for the annual Gothia Cup tournament.

The Gothia Cup is the world’s largest and most internationally wide-reaching youth football tournament; each year, around 1600 teams from 80 nations take part and they play 4500 games on 110 fields.

Club Doncaster Foundation staff and students will be taking a particular interest in the tournament as to two of their students will be taking the field in the famous red and white.

Callum Stockton and Louis Thwaites, both BTEC Level 3 learners, have been selected by Academy Manager, Paul Wilson, to play for the academy team in Gothenburg due to their stand out performances for the Club Doncaster Foundation Academy in the AOC Sports League.

The two are no strangers to playing in Europe, as they were both involved in the Foundation Academy’s successful tour in France, Callum said: “The foundation has given me loads of opportunities in my time as a student. I played over in France, which was amazing, I’ve played on the actual Keepmoat pitch and I also played for Buxton FC. It’s been a great week for me, I have finished my BTEC L3, signed for Rossington Main and now I’m going to Sweden to play for the Rovers Youth Team.”

Since speaking to Callum, we have been informed he sustained an injury during training, but will be assessed by the club physio and will hopefully join up with the team on Saturday.

From everyone at Club Doncaster Foundation, we wish Callum, Louis and the rest of the team the best of luck in Gothenburg. Rovers have been drawn in Group 5 with Skonto Riga, BK Hacken and Hammarby IF and will begin their campaign against BK Hacken on Monday 13th July at 10:20am.
