Insurance scammers

Recommended Posts

Direct Line join the list of insurance scammers.  They auto-enrol you in their automatic renewal system for home insurance.  Last year we got home insurance through them, £247.  This year the renewal came through the door, all flowery about how great they were and the renewal price hidden away on the last page but telling me I need to do nothing.  £360.

So, what's happened in this neighbourhood to increase my home insurance by 50%?  Crime has actually gone down, last year we had one petty theft in the area, this year we didn't even have that.  If our property flooded then we'd have already lost half of East Anglia.  We've made no claims.  Added nothing new to the house.  No new people in it.

That's them on the "screw you" list and yet another insurer will get far less than they wanted because we'll be using one of the comparison websites again.

Do they not get that a simple bit of loyalty would keep us?  I quite like what Direct Line offer but a 50% increase is just taking the proverbial.  One of the first lessons any business school teaches when they talk about marketing is that it costs far more to get a new customer than keep an existing one.

Managed to save a £65 per month on my building and contents insurance with Lloyds

Saved £65 a MONTH? You saved £780 a year?

Do you live in Buckingham Palace?

You SAVED more than twice my annual premium.

Is there an insurer who doesn't do this?

Just phoned Hastings direct to cancel the auto enrolled car insurance due to finding it cheaper.  Was asked if I had already taken out an alternative policy and when I said no, he asked if I'd like him to see what they could do.  Told him exactly what he could do!  Actually I didn't, it's not his fault is it, but it does annoy you, and I refused to allow them to give me a quote.

Just received my renewal notice in this morning's post. RBS wanted £952 this year! Just switched to an alternative for £206 for a better level of cover. I called them to cancel and they offered to "see what they could do". I told them if they couldn't be bothered to give me their best quote up front they needn't bother.

I was one of those lazy people who upon receiving my renewal letter did nothing, this year, after receiving the letter I decided to shop around and for 10 minutes of my time and a phone call, I managed to save £65 per month,

Sadly not Buckingham Palace, I live in the capital of Gods own County, York.

That's just what I do. I realise it's not the fault of the person on the phone, but I tell him to tell his supervisor that if they are going to treat me like a numpty they have lost my business for ever no matter what offer they come back with.

Looking at the stats on how many people change banks, insurance, utilities etc they are on a gravy train unfortunately.

Should we just go on price? How do we know if a company has a good claims record?

It seems to me that when you boil it down, of the 30-40 different quotes you get from the internet there's only ever 3-4 different companies who are actually backing your policy anyway.

I have to admit that I had to really bite my tongue to stop myself really having a go at the person on the phone. It would have been unfair on them, they are only doing their job after all.

This forums favourite newspaper the Daily Mail has picked up on this. In today's "Money Mail" they are highlighting the problem and going after the insurance companies.

That'll scare 'em

The only time I've claimed was with a company I'd chosen purely on price. They were pretty good and I was happy with the service.
