Vikings sign Houston

Recommended Posts

The Newcastle forum reveals some mixed reviews.....it would appear that Nathan Brown is opting for younger back rowers this year and so Houston has fallen out of favour......that said, a few folk seem to think he's a solid grafter, nothing special.

Tbh I'm just happy we've signed someone for the pack

He's had some good years in the NRL and will do a job for Widnes, but this is very much a "can't get a first grade spot in the NRL so i'll go to Super league" signing. We've had plenty of them though, so reckon he'll go ok for a year or so.

See what you did there...

Farmduck - aye true enough - swapping one ageing antipodean second row for another

Sometimes I wish I was allowed to like my own posts.

I hope this goes some way to putting Widnes fans' minds at rest. Come Feb, they'll be good to go.

I'm sure he'll do a decent job for Widnes, wont let the side down, but I dont think he's really what they need if they're going to climb out of the bottom 4. None of their pack really have that 'x' factor and they're almost entirely reliant on Brown to give them any creativity.

Does any team rely on members of their pack for creativity? We need big, experienced players in the pack who can get us up-field and do a shift in defence - that's all you really expect from your props/second rows (bit of pace/footwork helps too if poss).....when we're upfield we'll leave it to the backs to do the rest.

Yes, we rely on Brown for creativity - he's a half back so that should not come as too much of a surprise....that said, we've got a better pair of centres than last year and a new winger so the backline should tick along nicely provided we can lay the platform for them....reckon a new monstrous prop should help

When your teams in a bit of a hole and need someone to really step up I can't see who in the Widnes pack is going to do that. Leeds had Cuthbertson & Peacock, Wigan have O'Loughlin, Saints have Walmsley & Roby, Lynch did that for Cas, Hill & Currie for Warrington.

The point I was trying to make is that when you look at the Widnes pack there's nobody in there who the opposition defence will look at and consider a serious threat. Widnes are lacking that 'x' factor type of forward and the no doubt over inflated amount they're paying Houston may well have been better spent on a more creative forward, maybe someone like Ferres.

Betts should not name him in the starting line-up; Houston, XIII, it is not going to end well.

Incidentally the Apollo quote is actually "Houston, we've HAD a problem."

perhaps we tried? perhaps we didn't get a sniff before the NRL got him

anyway most of your examples are metre-makers who also tackle well.......a couple can offload well. I agree that our pack is not complete but we have some useful youngsters in there who may turn a few heads this year, just need some more size and experience to go with it

The article in Monday's League Express says "He was one of the Knights' most consistent players in 2015, making only three errors in 22 game sand finishing the season with a 95 per-cent tackle accuracy while making 1,743 metres from 196 carries."

The website  www.totalfootystats,com.au shows in 2015 he made an average of 36.5 tackles a game equating to 0.64 a minute.
