Our first date was carried out under the watchful gaze of her family.

After her brother had beat me up five times he told the family I wasnt being scared off. His dad then suggested they should meet up with me. It's very much against Romani tradition for a Rom woman to be involved with a Gadjo

That's a great photo Phil and a lovely story, congratulations. It takes me back to my childhood in the west riding. We lived in a big pea picking area and every summer the vardoes used to arrive and park on the common land and the Romanies used to work in the peas like the rest of us. 5/6d a bag was the last payment as I recall. The only time you see a vardoe now is if someone takes one to Appleby.

Worth a trip? I go past there quite frequently- see the sign- but must call in there one day.

It definitely is John, I can personally recommend it

My grand-dad's grand-dad was a Romani who came to the North West to dig the canals. He met his wife and stayed.

My other half thinks that me being one-sixteenth 'traveller' is hilarious as I live two miles from where I was born and it took her ten years to persuade me to move house - one mile the other side of the village.

Looking forward to the thread "Hornetto ventures outside the village" followed by the obvious TV series "Hornetto vs Palin - The Travel Diaries"

PS Phil, is it ok to say I fancy your better half?

Send your brother in law round to beat him up five times

Nah, I'll probably just belt him myself

There's a sort of underlying tension on this thread, with everyone thinking about making this a full-on TRL 'reader's wives' thread but noone willing to jump in first.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

Ha ha - I'm off to Sydney on Wednesday. Which I believe is at least the other side of Manchester ;)
