well seeing that weve just signed a new aussie...time for a bit of fun who are your top 6 players from down under to play for dewsbury

heres mine

1. tony murphy (tackling)
2. chris mita (making openings)
3. glen coughlan (busting tackles)
4. brendan williams (making breaks)
5. geoff leary (solid performer)
6. brendan o'maera (all round work)

it was going to be the top 5 players, but was changed to 6,because all the above did well in my eyes for DEWSBURY

Tony Murphy, not a big fella, but boy could he tackle.

Cant remember all the names, but the year we were in the old first Division 85/86, we had another Aussie second rower Les ?????? (cant remember the surname) who was a bit usefull, but always injured. Also 89/90 and 90/91 season, we had a second rower again Tim/Timmy Butler i think the name was, another Good un. Also Glenn Bell was a favourite.

Chris Mita was the King of the Intercepts and was something special the year we went up. Wasnt as effective in the first Division, but had his moments and scored a wonder Try at Central Park against Wigan that year.

Glen Coughlan. He would run through a Brick wall that Lad and great side step for a forward. Wasnt he discovered at Dewsbury Moor and working on the Bins?

If there has to a Number one though, i cant look beyond either Murphy or Mita though. Good Call Coolie.

I don't know about playing at the Moor (although I should do with my username, really) but yes Glenn worked at the yard on George St on the bins all the time he was playing for Dews. He even made friends with Batley fans who worked there, so that just goes to show what a top bloke he was.

Dennis Trembath !!!!! Yes, how could i forget. New Zealand Anchor man on the Bob sleigh Team i belive (of all things). He was Awesome from close to the oppositions Try Line.

We have had some Good Kiwis and Aussies. We started to lose our way a bit with the South Africans, but thats another Story.

He was known as just "Two Rivers" and his name was Trent Jordan. Do I get first prize?

Can't forget Danny McKelvie another workhorse like Tony Murphy. I think our best Aussie was Brendan Williams alongside his compatriot Paul Evans who was another good player before the infamous Aussie knee took hold. Other players from that era were Wayne Collins and David O'Donnell (who played within hours of receiving his work permit!) Brett Patterson or Mr Patterson as he was known was another "Aussie knee" candidate.

Finally my earliest memories of Antipodeans were Chris "Gas" Mita and Dave "Toots" Sefuiva.

Ask your dad how good Vic Hey was laugh.gif

Supposedly the finest Aussie ever to play for Dewsbury.

An Aussie who played under Terry Crook. I think he played in the 'A' team mid-week against Wakefield Trinity at Belle Vue and made such an impression that he was drafted into the 1st team to play against Hunslet at Elland Road on the Sunday. He was a regular in the team from then on until Maurice Bamford took over.

Mark Hooklyn played in 13 games for the 1st team during thr 1988/89 season. Come on G.F.D.U., think back to the period just after the stand burnt down but before the roller coaster ride under Maurice Bamford's coaching.
