Red Star Belgrade RLC - Player-coach
An odd journey through rugby league perhaps, but one that has brought me full circle back to the game I grew up with and that my granddad played for Hull FC, Hull KR and Dewsbury long before I was born.
At 36 I should probably be concentrating more on the coaching and less on the playing, but my body missed a lot of years of contact and so maybe it'll hold up a bit longer - at least enough for Serbia's emerging league.
I'm involved in Serbian rugby league development for purely selfish reasons: I'm probably going to be living here for the rest of my life and I want the greatest game to be here with me.
Currently - spring 2012
I took over the main Red Star Belgrade RLC first team coaching role at the end of 2011. Pre-season games began in February and the season kicked off in mid-March (3 rounds have been played so far). In all games my record is currently 7 & 2 (the defeats being a 106-6 Round 1 hammering to Dorchol in the only game that really matters (back to the drawing board) and a 46-16 cup defeat to Dorchol (the drawing board seems to have helped)).
I run Red Star training sessions three times a week (usually Tuesdays & Thursday from 6 to 8 and Saturdays from 4) at Marakana Stadium and still organise the Sunday morning rugby touch session below the magnificent Belgrade Fortress beside the Danube (9 years and still going strong).
Around 30 players of varying levels of experience (from top Serbia international Zoran Pesic to first-time novices) turn up to at least one Marakana session per week, but we are yet to break the threshold to be able to establish a reserve team to compete in Tier 2 (we'd need at least 40 regulars for that). - the Sunday morning touch game includes girls and boys, young and old, local and expat.
As members of the Red Star Sporting Society, the rugby league club enjoys free access to the facilities at the stadium, including the 3G artificial training pitch that currently serves as our home pitch.
We have a transport sponsor (Lasta) for games outside of Belgrade -- the furthest away game in the country is a 6-hour drive away -- and even a beer sponsor in the form of BIP, the Belgrade Brewery, which we are hoping to exploit for a future clubhouse bar.
We have set up a twinning partnership with Super League Club Hull KR under the slogan 'Uniting Red & White' and have already sent three players for training with the Rovers under-20s and received some kit from Craven Park. We are hoping to establish a similar partnership with St. George Illawarra Dragons (bearing in mind the large Serbian population in Wollongong).
The Serbian league is formally in its 10th year, but practically in its 6th, with 2006 marking the foundation year for most clubs currently in the top flight.
The league contains ten teams in two mini-leagues: Tier 1 - Dorchol (Belgrade), Red Star (Belgrade), Tsar Lazar (Krusevac), Radnichki (Nova Pazova); Tier 2 - Podbara (Novi Sad), Stari Grad (Belgrade), Nish (Nis), Novi Beograd (Belgrade), Soko (Vranje), Morava Cheetahs (Leskovac).
The gulf between the top team (Dorchol) and the next teams (Red Star, Tsar Lazar & Radnicki) ranges between 30 & 100 points per game. Note: Dorchol has never been beaten in a domestic league or cup match.
The gulf between the Tier 1 teams excluding Dorchol and the Tier 2 teams ranges from 40-80 points per game.
Dorchol gathers crowds of several hundred supporters per match, as do some of the clubs in the smaller towns, like Vranje and Leskovac.
Our mission is to compete with Dorchol on the field and promote the game off it.
There is no deadline, but it would be nice to see Red Star and Dorchol in the Super League before I die.
