Brian McDermott new Toronto Wolfpack coach

I have never had an issue with North American expansion, would say I know more than most about that area. Watched Canadian development well before the Wolfpack were on the scene and don't need to be given an introduction to the people involved with your club. What I have is an issue with information that is not factual and propaganda. Never been about geography. Its not just about the Wolfpack its about the sport going in a dangerous direction in terms of media coverage and governance. It is possible to be involved in a sport and not take a purely tribalistic point of view and want what is best for the sport as whole. I personally think Canadian Rugby League missed a massive opportunity in League One to play home grown talent. In McDermott I think you now have someone who want to grow the game at all levels. Jon Wilkin has echoed my own opinions on your playing style and discipline problems.

    Rowley leaves Toronto

The Jon Wilkin interview makes more sense. Joining a club and calling them a but of thugs at the same time didnt make sense. Waiting for McDermotts work visa to clear?

    Rugby League in the Spectator

Its a difficult one its not that its bad as such, when people promote the sport in that way. But we are aiming to be a sport that plays to its strengths. My own personal belief is Rugby League at its core is a sport for everyone. Regardless of social background, size, geography, race or religion. We want to say we have family values, but we are also one of the most professional sports you can play. Our image should be more accessible version of American Football. Something that every person in every family can have a role within. That be fan, player or administrator. Thank you for the link.

Unfortunately as a sport we have bought into the stereotypes and been happy to allow that image of our sport to be sold. Particularly by the BBC just grateful of getting any attention from them. At times the prematch stuff done by the BBC before Wembley has been unwatchable. Maxine Peake and Brass bands springs to mind. Our image is based on a North of England that has not existed for 30 years but we play to any ageing fan base stuck in the past. The reality is as sport we are as much alien to the north of england as we were once alien to the south.

    Pre-Season Yorkshire Cup

That or they can go with the shield, plate idea that was used in the emerging nations so everyone played x number of games

    Pre-Season Yorkshire Cup

Good ideas come outside of the RFL look at the World Club Challenge.
  12. It also creates a close political circle that protects its own interests.
  13. If the RFU had a plan to destroy Rugby League it would probably not be more effective at destroying the sport than the RFL is.
  14. We have a proper independant process that comes with transparency for leadership. Evidence shown how that person came to placed and was not just chosen internally. That person is placed on a fixed term to ensure that the sport meets all the requirements it should be meeting for proper governance. Given the current state of the sport anybody who cares about it should be critcal.

Google britball back in the 80s before nfl europe. Rugby League teams cant be allowed to come and go it will kill the sport. Not if you replace an established Rugby League team town with one that will come and go.

If are we going to bring peoples character into question. We should look at the pasts of everyone involved in the Canadian game and not just single out those who raise concerns. My issue is not the location of Canada, but the spin going around all this.

You would have to contact the board members at the time to get the official reasons.

    The future of League One

Thats is one of the joys of amateur rugby league when you see a big name turn out unexpectedly. Still wont beat Paul Scholes turning out for Royton town.

He was kicked out in 2015, dont think he had much choice in leaving Canadian Rugby League.

Hemel pull out of League 1

It was a better spectacle and had more interest. We had the game on most of the available tv channels. Clubs were in a healthier place most could raise decent crowds and owned assets. Super League has not resulted in bigger tv audiences, better financial stability, higher skill levels, bigger foot print for the game. In fact the opposite. Super League was Lyndsey realising he had doomed Wigan by constantly overspending. Clubs have not invested in grounds it has gone in to the pockets of players and agents. It also changed the RFL for the worst, nothing we have achieved could not have been done without taking the SKY deal and going full time. The argument is always based on the stupid quest to match Australia which is impossible. It might come as shock to you but todays victory against New Zealand was meaningless. Nobody in the country cares or knows about Rugby League anymore. Except an ever decreasing circle of people who dont understand the game is dying.

Personally i think the reasons are down to ego and vanity rather than logic. If its not shining the spotlight on the mainy ego's they are not interested. They dont like to share their toys. Which is why i think you need someone like mcdermott in the club. Argyle,Perez,Noble,Rowley and Vickers all too in love with themselves. Argyle arguably has a right. But i think the club needs different personality types involved if it is to succeed. I.E. Be there in 20 years time. Knock your less fashionable clubs but they will most likely survive for decades to come.
