  1. Tony was a top bloke, and always 100% committed on the pitch. Played 9 years at Swinton between 1992 and 2001. Made 243 appearances , the most by any Swinton player in last 40 years. At the time he retired in 2001 he was the last playing link with our Station Road days. Very moving minute's silence at yesterday's Lions v Skolars match.
  2. I've lost count of all the grounds I've been on - and that's just watching Swinton's home matches! 😉
  3. An invitation to all Wigan supporters! Don't forget to support your team in this Thursday's pre-season match against Swinton Lions at Heywood Road, Sale. Swinton v Wigan kicks-off at 7.45pm. If you're driving, there is ample free parking in the streets surrounding the ground. Post code is M33 3WB. Or if you prefer the tram, the ground is just 5 minutes walk from Brooklands Metro Station. Heywood Road is a cracking authentic rugby ground with a large licensed bar and we're sure that you'll enjoy your visit! The Lions are very much a club on the up and we regard this as a great opportunity to test ourselves against the Super League champions! So don't forget to come down and enjoy the friendly atmosphere of Heywood Road! Adults £12, Over 65s £10; Kids under 16 FREE. Best wishes Steve , Swinton Lions
  4. Hi everyone Just a quick message to highlight the fact that there's a match on this coming Sunday! All Oldham fans will be very welcome to Heywood Road, Sale, on Sunday (post code M33 3WB), where's there's plenty of free parking in the streets immediately adjacent to the ground. We've been great rivals for the past couple of years (2 all last year!) and no doubt there will be more than a hint of competitiveness about Sunday's game! Adults are £12, Concessions (65 plus) are £10, and kids of school age are FREE. It's a shared gate so please come along and help your own club. Being just 5 minutes walk from Brooklands metro station, our ground is dead easy to get to from Oldham on the tram if you'd prefer to leave the car at home. Please share this message with your family and mates. Cheers , Steve (Swinton Lions)
  5. Definitely officially 22 as at today's date
  6. Don't know where to start with my team, Swinton! But a few off the top of my head (away matches): Fulham/London @Wealdstone FC; Crystal Palace Athletics; Chiswick Poly; Barnet Copthall; Wellington College, Crawthorne; Sheffield @ Millmoor, Rotherham; Mansfield Marksman @ Sutton Town FC, Kirby-in-Ashfield; Carlisle @ Gilford Park; Roots Hall, Southend; Neath RUFC; Coychurch Park, Bridgend; Brewery Field, Bridgend; some dog track near Doncaster (name escapes me); Rochdale RUFC; Headingley RUFC, Kirkstall; Hurst Cross, Ashton; Moss Lane, Altrincham; Fylde RUFC. And home games at Station Road; Gigg Lane, Bury; Moor Lane, Salford City FC; Orrell RUFC; Victory Park, Chorley; Hilton Park, Leigh; Leigh SV; Heywood Road, Sale; The Willows; Sedgley Park RUFC; Select Security Stadium; AJ Bell Stadium; JJB, Wigan; Maine Road; Burnden Park; Wheaters Field, Broughton; and depending on how far you're going back, our historic grounds at Burying Lane; Stoneacre; & Chorley Road.
  7. Really? The Swinton website carries an article "squeaky bum time" which spells out exactly the various scenarios. No complacency whatsoever.
  8. A football club may ply its trade under the rules of the Rugby Football League, The Football Association or indeed the Rugby Football Union. All are "football clubs", but not necessarily soccer clubs. Hull FC are simply sticking to their historical origins, and so they should.
  9. Cheers Clifford! I think Tony Lazenby still does bits and bobs on EBay
  10. Totally agree Mark LP. I used to produce a collectors catalogue back in the 1990s (Northern Programmes RL) and it was an exclusive market even then. Possibly no more than 150 collectors, some more enthusiastic than others. I became so worried about the lack of new collectors coming through that I sold my entire stock for a song. Some high profile clubs seemed to have no dedicated collectors whatsoever. Nowadays the serious collectors are mostly over 45s who like me have been at it for 25 years or more. But if anyone out there has any old Swinton please let me know - only 32 homes and 27 aways needed since 1945.
  11. ...and bravely under a pseudonym
  12. If you're going to make obnoxious & cowardly comments then you should be prepared to back them up. It's not up to others to "research" them.
  13. Care to elaborate?
  14. Looking forward to the hit-out at Big Fellas Stadium tomorrow - perhaps a repeat of last week's last minute field-goal is on the cards?
  15. Alex Murphy uses that anecdote in association with Von Vollenhoven. Still funny though.
