Can Black men play half back

45 posts in this topic

I was discussing the Jamacan rugby league team with my mate as he is Jamacan and he reckons they will never do anything because black men he reckons cant play half back and this will always be there let down. After having a think about it i cant remember any only maybe Ellery Hanley, and he was more a loose forward

I dont rate him really at half back, looks very akward to me. Same as Stanley Gene when he plays 6 always looks to me like they put him there because theres no one else

Kyle Eastmond at Saints seems not to be too shabby at half back from the bit I have seen of him? Then again they do say it's the exception proves the rule

Kyle Eastmond? Preston Cambell? Hanley was never ever a six though mate.

Difficult to discuss really without been accused of racism..... I do believe that their must be some genetic differences between all the races, but what they are is difficult to pin point. On the other hand maybe their is a lack of black half backs because there are / were no black half backs acting as role models for aspiring professionals?

This trait appears in rugby & football management.... Bar Tigana how many other black managers have their been in the English to flight?

How many world class male tennis players are black? How many world class boxers are black?

I also think that the barriers some people face may influence the sports they play as well as their position just as much as their race.

They did used to say that black men couldnt open the batting, but that theory was put to bed when Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes destroyed England on a regular basis in the 70s and 80s. As for racism if a subject like this cant be discussed then gord help us

The only sport in my mind were Black people do not excel is swimming, every other sport they appear to do so.

Carl Gibson was brilliant at 6 for Batley. When he moved to Leeds they played him on the wing, presumably they believed the myth. He was brilliant for us at fullback for a season.

He certainly was, that step he had off the same leg everytime it never failed him :D . Although in the twilight of his career when we signed him, he was still a real good un :D:D

I don't give that it any credence at all. What about all the half backs that play for PNG, Samoa, Fiji, etc. It just about as bad as the film about basketball 'White men can't jump.' If you see the black athletes running you can see they have the flexibility and speed to be great half backs. It is all a matter of training. The statement about Jamacians sounds a bit rum to me.

Carl Gibson was never a 6 in a million years, all the people mentioned in my opinion are just filler iners at half back. Im not racist or homophobic i couldnt care less who anyone sleeps with or what colour there skin is, and both threads were tounge in cheek to grinde Robin away from his interview revision, although i do reckon my m8 has a point

Are you serious?. A man/womens skin colour has nothing to do with their abilities to do anything....

Wrong, Carl was a great stand off at Batley, and definitely not filling in because we had no one better. I would suggest Jamaica may not make it as they do not have enough players who are good enough in many positions.

Carl played 6 for Batley in a Yorkshire cup tie at P O Road in the eighties. Batley were extremely unlucky to lose. Foxy scored the winning try at the P O Road end after what looked like a Union rolling maul, I wouldn't have given it anyway. It was a shame for Batley, Carl ran the game for them.

Am I missing something here? I don't recall Carl Gibson EVER playing at stand-off for us??!!

My memories of him at Batley are of him playing centre and stand-off.

Once again we have received a complaint about the thread asking us to judge whether or not it is racist. In my opinion it is NOT, however, the title suggests that people of a certain coloured skin cannot play certain positions at rugby. In this respect I feel we should be very careful as slipping into racist jargon is easily done. This would be totally unacceptable and I will therefore keep a close eye on proceedings.

It could Bob, as you say, easily end up that way, but hasn't.

I'm made aware of complaints being made and by whom, but I can't for the life of me see where or how racism comes into it.

A conversation between suggy and his black mate, prompted a discussion about the jamaican team and black half backs - (well more about 7's than 6's) and suggy brought it to the forum.

If he'd simply asked the question, " how many good black scrum halves have there been over the last x years and who were they??" - it might not have propted the complaints. Then again, it may have.

I fight inequality as part of my job - everyday! I loathe marginalisation in all it's forms. I'm not seeing it here.

and suggy and Terry, Shaun Edwards had ginger)ish) hair!!!!!! GITS!!!!!! lol!
