squad for next year

Birchy

Recommended Posts

Powell was indicating in the pont and cas that he is looking to strengthen the squad for next year. I was thinking where the hell would he do it? We have quality all over the park now, who would you bring in? Would he just strengthen the reserves? Whose contracts are up for renewal at the end of the year?

UP THE ROVERS!

Personally I'd wait until at least the start of the play off series until we worry about next year? Every coach wants a stronger squad, year on year.

Also can't see the point in spending brass boosting the reserves? They seem pretty strong as far as I can tell. We seem to be spending a lot of money at the moment, so we've got to be careful. Its too early to speculate about next year, we could win every game from here on in or lose every game. Lets concentrate on the job in hand.

Not only that Phil, but the current players should now be thinking 'it could be me thats replaced' so step up their game even more to avoid the cut!

Just a thought but...... after the speculation last year about Senior, if he became available to us next year, would we want him?

Personally, I would say no.

i think i'd agree sidnee. he'd want big bucks and at 35 i'm not sure we'd get value for money we're getting out of jesse and liam.

superleague??

With the possible exception of Zak, there is nobody in our squad superleague quality! At this level this squad is the poodles swingers! Superleague? Most certainly not!

Yes robin, but if players are coming out of contract or have clauses in their contracts saying they can go for free if a SL club comes in for them, then its a no brainer as far as SL clubs are concerned.A SL club could offer them a relatively small full time contact and if they come up trumps, then great, and if they fall short of SL standard then he gets released when his contact expires.

1. No player currently contracted to rovers has a "get out of jail free" clause should a super league club come in for them.

2. Contract monies offered to players in our league aren't always as lucrative as you'd think, and quite often not what they could earn at the top of the championship as a part timer.

3. Giving up work to play full time quite oft puts part time players off sl.

I still don't believe that any of our players will be of interest to sl with the possible exception of zak

I agree with you to a certain extent robin, the vast majority of our squad have decent F/T jobs and decent P/T rugby contracts, and are not going to be intersted in SL unless they are offered a decent annual salary over 2-3 years(which aint gonna happen),but a player like briggs(who i think is good enough to be given A SL chance),who is still relatively young,or JJP(who i think lacks pace for SL) who may have just one shot at SL,would probably be willing to take up a modest SL contract.

He's one of those players I can't stand, no logical reason for that but I wouldn't want him in a Fev shirt.

Watched Terry Patchetts Post Office today and was startled to see the clay looking monsters looked like Senior.

Really? so c*s enquiring about hardman was just a joke? Some of players in superleague wouldnt get into Keithley team!!!

Seems to me you have a soft spot for zak, he is good yes but i wouldnt agree he is only player that is super league quality.

Hardman may have enquired about Zak yes- as a result of their then acute injury situation to the backs. But an enquiry is all. He does not have anywhere near the pace for SL. Our league he's a top No1. Safe as houses. But I don't think he or any other player we have would successfully command a regular spot in SL. Zak wouldn't, - YET!! But 2-3 seasons on, his pace, footballing skills and all round athleticism would get him a SL gig.

Yes - from what I've seen of Zak's development, I think he's a cracking prospect. On that you most definately have me sussed! :P:P

PS

Doesn't it make a pleasant change that we can have this debate about Fev players!! In previous seasons the BoD of the day have just not been able to assemble players the quality we now have on show.

How do you know our players arent good enough for SL Robin I thought you didnt watch it!!!!

There are certainly players in our squad who could do a job in SL especially after the benefits of FT training. Briggs, Saxton, Grayson, could do a decent job and perhaps JJP, Hardman, Divorty and Dale could do something. Lets not forget Coady is playing SL this season!

As for strengthening the squad, If I were to sign someone now Id maybe look at a prop, 13, and outside back.

Brilliant that Darryl is seeking to strengthen even further for next season. If we stand still others will catch up. Rovers need to be ahead of the opposition just to remain where we are.

Well this thread has been really interesting, I thought some people might say its too early to think about this. I reckon we could do with cover for our centres if coady goes at the end, and i agree we need another tony tonks style knuckle dragger!

Granted, my SL experiences aren't a wide as most, but I have seen the odd game - in the pub, at the mates houses etc. So I accept my knowledge on all things SL probably isn't as deep as uours.

However, seeing what I have and seeing the standard of players that have made the transition from Championship to SL with any kind of permanence and maintaining a regular slot in SL, i.e. Danny K, Karl Pratt, JR, Ritchie Whiting, they came across to me as having that bit extra! Ovious skills/pace/build for their position that would easily identify their ability to develop and dominate a position within a SL team.

Maybe their "noticeability" was because those they were playing with weren't the same quality as the collective unit of players we have now. You've mentioned 8 players in your post you identify as SL possibles. I think that as a unit we are very effective and illustrates the old addage that " the sum of the collective is greater than that of the individual parts".

Some of those players you mention have already had a crack at SL and failed. Coady has indeed played SL, but I'm not sure he'll figure in Leeds longer term plans.

It's a mute point Tex and it matters not really whether I think our players are or are not SL ready/capable.

I think we have a great squad with some cracking lads in it. Daryl has got a team ethic going and I think that is reflected when you look at the MOM threads posted this year - they are so varied and no one player dominates.

For the 1st time in years I'm happy with the squad we have and it's reassuring to see the coach/BoD are looking to keep improving

Fully agree, Birchy. Although Morrison has done some sterling work,I still think that he is a bit lightweight. There is also the question of will good old Stu be donning the shirt next year?. A couple of brick **** houses will not come amiss, ie; Catalans style.

Not sure who it would be but I wouldn't mind seeing a ball handling loose forward who would be capable of plugging a gap at stand off if Briggys was injured or suspended. Not that I have a problem with the lads who have played 13 this season as they have all done decent jobs just a personal opinion that it would be nice to have a specialist loose forward.

Why what have you heard to make you think Stu won't be here?

That was the plan with danny Allan I reckon pal, but don't think he's been at all impressive

I agree for me he has been the biggest disappointment. How about briggs at 13, and kain/finn scrum half half back?

Im not sure we should write Danny Allan off just yet, Ultimately we may have to. He came with big wraps and surely he cant have turned poor overnight maybe their are things not right that we are dont know about lets hope the coach can work on him.

Having said that it would be interesting to see Briggs at lose, though not sure he has the size.
