Whitehaven(4) 14 SHEFFIELD EAGLES (0)24

A truly special day with a special "Order of Service"

Going Home - sung by Cathy Marcangelo in memory of the 12 brutaly killed in Cumbria

Teams led onto the pitch by Gary Purdham's sons

Match officials, club officials, directors and members of emergency serices line up in front of grandstand

Ros Purdham, widow of Gary, releases 12 doves to signify the 12 killed, from centre of pitch, followed by 1 minute of applause as mark of respect for all who lost their lives.

This was VERY MOVING and dignified.

Match kicked off and was very close fought game with the score being nil all until 29th minute when Whitehaven's Eilbeck went over for an unconvered try. This was just after Eagles were forced to drop out from under the sticks on 27 mins. Penalty count by now was 7 to 3 in Eagles favour and the last of these saw Whitehaven's #30 sin binned for obstruction at play of the ball. Persistent ripping had given Eagles 3 penalties.

The second half evened out with Mr Brooke awarding each side 4 penalties but Eagles came out with a little more purpose than before.

Tries were scored by Peter Green (42 min), Menzie Yere (46 min and 64 min), Craig (Super hooker) Cook (77 min), and Brendon (Did he really touch it down) Lindsay on 79 min. Brendon had 2 stabs at goal, one close and one the England soccer team would have claimed, I think it is 3 points in Gaelic football!! Tim Bergin took over kicking duties and kicked 2 from 3.

'Haven scored twice through Calvert (1 converted by Rudd) .

Much better game, nice to win at the Rec.

Weather - after the torrential rain in Barrow and north a very warm and sunny afternoon.

Crowd :860

ps according to th RFL Craig Cook is now MATT Cook !

Thanks Eagleraider, a good and sensitive post. I note that we left it late (again) to sew the match up - 2 tries in the last 3 minutes!

Having just watched it on Eagles TV, I wonder also whether Brendon did actually ground the ball properly but heigh ho, some you win, some you lose.

Oh for a reliable goal kicker though.

We were stood about 20 yards away and were convinced he didn't ground it, but who cares, it was awarded in Eagles favour FOR ONCE, and sometimes you just have to take luck when it comes your way !!! :D

Mr Brook was taking teams back about 12+ yards (oops metres) yet the 'Haven fans were convinced Eagles were off-side at every POB, (they were at some, but you play to the refs decisions [worryingly I complimented him a couple of times]!) and certain 'Haven players were in distinct need of some work on distance appreciation!! ... and so were the touch judges.....

Brendon's 2nd attempt at a conversion was the worst I've ever seen him make, was this the kick to end all kicking.

Tim has a good action !
