Chris Riley targets England place

14 posts in this topic

Warrington winger Chris Riley has set his sights on a place in the England squad at this autumn's Four Nations Series.

"The way it has been going I believe I have got a great shout. I will do my best for Warrington and if I am good enough hopefully I will get selected."

He added; "It would be the best thing in my career - as well as winning trophies - to pull that jersey over my head with that badge on my chest. It would be a great moment for me and my family.

"I am still waiting for the phone call but if Steve McNamara wants to select me he knows where I am.

With 22 tries scored I think Chris has a good chance as we aint blessed with wingers and he can also play full back.

Can't say he is wrong on that, consistently he has been as good if not better than any other English winger in S/L so far this season and if consistency is any criteria that McNamara works upon then Riley has to be in with a shout.

Tom Briscoe and Hall are probably the front runners, but of the rest Riley can certainly hold his head up this season and last also.

I must say that when Carney went to Warrington last year and Riley got the heave ho to make way for him, I was amazed. As Riley was playing so well then and I thought it was a bloody insult not to mention an injustice at that time.

His stature may be a drawback when the S/Hemi wingers are taken into consideration but the lad has never lacked spirit or courage and I would, on form this term, place him as deserving an outstanding chance of a call-up.

WTF!!!! Riley is ######, not just ###### but very lucky to play in a team that can make him look good

IMHO Ryan Hall is only just better than Riley, and he is thomas the tank

###### and thats being polite.

Winger, no ######ing ginger thats all, a spelling mistake and an excuse of a winger.

I read the article on superleague.co.uk yesterday and was astonished it wasn't on here...

...low and behold.

This does tie in to a similar question I will pose once the regular season has ended.

I think Riley is a decent player but I don't think he's quite upto test level yet, if he continues to develop and can cut out some mistakes then in a couple of years he could be very good.

He vies with Mathers for being the worst player in the second placed team in SL.

I'm sorry, but Chris Riley should never pull on an England jersey. If you examine the quality that Australia and New Zealand have at their disposal in terms of pure physique and pace, then players such as Chris Riley aren't international class. Maybe we can stick him in the side for the 2011 friendly against France, let him win a cap and score a few tries, just for the sake of his Grandmas scrapbook?

Chris Riley is good at club level, but that's as far as it should go. Definately not test match standard. The depressing thing is I don't think we have any really good wingers at the moment. Most wingers nowadays don't even know how to take on an opponent by using the touchline. Most just run inside and take the tackle.

And most don't get the ball running onto it at full pace or the right line off of their centre. I don't know if it's just the standard of the wingers or the fact that the standard of those inside them is also lacking in our country at the moment.

For the record Hall, Briscoe and beleive it or not Gardner are the three specialist wingers that are head and shoulders above the others.

Goulding has looked good for Wigan but then so has Pryce.

Riley has benefited from having good centres at the club, not sure how he would fair if he didnt??

But its a big step up to Test Rugby and in an ideal world we would have two class English wingers at least but in Hall, Fox and co we have very average wingers.

Too lightweight, him on a wing trying to stop a rampaging inglis would be like watching lomu trample the underwoods in onion many moons ago
