Carlos Zalduendo confirmed as the new president of French Rugby League

Recommended Posts

Confirmed last night in Carcassonne that Carlos Zalduendo is now the president of the FFR XIII, from what I know of Carlos this appears to be a good choice, he has demonstrated ambition through pushing Toulouse to enter super league and also brought investment into the club through the oval table business meetings, aswell as managing to keep the club afloat financially when they went through tough times in the championship. Add to this the youth development at the regional pole youth training centre.

The key areas of focus for Carlos will be the possible implementation of Super XIII which will include summer rugby league, the transition of French league from semi pro to pro at the higher levels, the improvement of the national teams which will include the hiring of a new coach. Increasing participation levels and solid but progressive governance.

French rugby league is now at a crossroads between being a small underfunded sport in a tough financial climate which translates to a type of amateurism on and off the field and becoming a fast growing and dynamic national sporting body, Carlos's tenure and the decisions which he will make in the next few years will define the path league will take for the next generation.

yeah, the correct choice from all sides point of view though not the first choice of many, he is well known for not getting on with some of his collegues mainly because he speaks his mind - he has many ambitions for the french game including a complete restructure (again !) of the french federal set-up with a 12 team Elite division asap among his priorities - on the international scene he will be more patient but wants a new coach in place well before the build up to the next World Cup which is obvious but he stressed he/FFR13 wouldn't be rushed into a decision

Carlos, the ex cheif of police at Toulouse played 23 times for his country as either prop or 2nd rower and made his debut against New Zealand in 1971 - the charismatic figure with the moustache will hand over the Toulouse presidency to concentrate his efforts on his new role as well as continuing his drive to get TO13 into SL for 2015 - the integral part of the SL bid will be negotiations with a tv company, preferably Bein Sports as a package with Catalans to have all the home games covered. Reconstruction work at Les Minimes will begin in the new year
