Over 35’s representative side the BARLA Bulldogs fly from Manchester Airport on Sunday 25th November to take part in the International Veterans event in the prestigious blue riband event the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens.

The squad, which has been selected following the Over 35’s BARLA County over 35’s Tri Series earlier this year, has trained hard and ready for their group games in Pool C were they will play Malta Marauders, The Beer Hunters, and Racing Vets on Thursday 29th November. Their opening clash is against The Beer Hunters at 9.00am, followed by the Malta Marauders at 11.20am and completed with their game against the Racing Vets at 3.20pm. Dependent on results they will move forward the following day to the quarter finals of this competition or be placed in the plate competition the following day Friday 30th November.

The Bulldogs have a great record since competing in Dubai and have always reached the quarter finals of the main event and player coach and former rugby league legend and Great Britain international Mark Forster will be hoping to keep up that record.

Also taking part in the tournament are a side of former and current rugby league legends ‘Joining Jack’ who will be playing in Pool E of this event.

BARLA Great Britain International Manager Mick Turner who will be managing the side as well as the media said, “The squad have trained really hard following the Tri Series and it’s a credit to their dedication to turn up for those sessions as well as turning out week in and week out for their clubs sides playing competitive thirteen a side rugby league.

“The criteria for selection are that they are actually playing the game competitively, from the outset the concept to play in Dubai was to encourage senior players to continue their rugby league careers as well as encourage players to come out of retirement, with a view to increasing participation at this level. Unfortunately there is no competitive international rugby league tournament throughout the world offering an incentive of competitive rugby for players over thirty five years of age.

“It is a huge honour for them to represent their country in the twilight of their careers and just reward for what they are doing. We will be joined this year by fellow rugby league side Joining Jack and will be giving them our full support when our side isn’t playing as I am sure they will be when they are not playing.

“It would be surreal if both sides progress and meet each other in the knockout stages but we are not looking that far ahead, just focusing on our opening game on Thursday.”

BARLA BULLDOGS: David Wynne, Paul Dean, Thomas McKinnon, Kevin Hetherington, Michael Ward, Sean Richardson, Stephen Bird, Stephen Morton, Lee Kelley, Adam Hoyle, James Walker, Christopher Peach, Mark Forster, Kieron Kavanagh, Steve Caley .
