Helliwell named Chyampionship Player of the Week

Player of the Week – Luke Helliwell (Hunslet Hawks)

Scrum-half Luke Helliwell excelled in his first game as captain, helping Hunslet to a 42-22 win over Doncaster.

Hawks coach Barry Eaton said: “We put some pressure on Luke’s shoulders, making him captain after David March missed out through injury, and he responded really well.

“He thrived on that extra responsibility and made sure we stuck to our game-plan, even when we were 16-0 down inside the first quarter.

“Luke showed real composure, kicked well and probably topped the tackle count because Doncaster were sending a lot his way. It was his best ever game in a Hunslet shirt.”

Performance of the Week – Workington Town

Workington Town’s second win of the season came from a sensational second-half display against Cumbrian rivals Barrow Raiders.

The scores were locked at 10-10 at half time, but Mark Calderwood, Kris Coward, Jarrad Stack, Peter Lupton and Brett Phillips all scored after the break to give Workington a 38-10 victory.

Workington coach Gary Charlton said: “We were going sideways rather than forward in the first half, but the boys rolled up their sleeves in the second half.

“We took our chances very well. We’ve now played well for 40 minutes against Sheffield Eagles and Barrow. When we play well for 80 minutes, we’ll be able to hold our own against anyone in this division.”

Try of the Week – Johnny Campbell (Batley Bulldogs)

Batley Bulldogs coach John Kear said that Johnny Campbell’s dramatic last play try against Halifax, which earned his side an 18-all draw, reminded him of England winger Ryan Hall.

Kear said: “It was Ryan Hall-esque, it was a sensational finish.

“When you watched it live you thought he had half a chance, and he’d taken it.

“But when you review it and look at the replays, he shows a great grip to put the ball down one-handed, and has great body awareness to keep himself in the field of play.

“There was obviously immense pressure from the opposition, as well as pressure from the context of the try – it was the last play of the game and our last chance to get a result.”
