Manchester Rangers - future C1 club?

107 posts in this topic

There's a new 6k stadium being built in Gorton for Belle Vue speedway and there are plans for a new RL team to be playing out of there in Championship 1 in 2015. Bring it on! They've put in an application to the RFL and are in talks with the council about playing at the new venue (which is due for completion in the middle of next year). Former Wigan player Chris Irwin and former RL Development Manager Phil Fitton are behind the plan along with 3 businessmen.

Hope this all comes to fruition.

Great news, its been a Long time coming for a professional/semi-professional team in Manchester, looks like I've got a potential second favourite team.

Why not Belle Vue Rangers? Historic name, and it would fit in more with the stadium.

sorry, didnt put in the source. It's in today's League Express. Also promising quotes from the deputy leader of the council.

while the stadium probably wont be as good plus it'd have a sodding speedway track I think it'd be down to them having security of tenure there while I doubt City would want a semi pro rugby club playing on the pitch where their pampered young men are learning their trade. And the rent would no doubt be a lot less.

Sounds good then. Talk of new teams is cheap, most never kick a ball but this sounds like it might have legs.

There's already a Community RL club Formed ( East Mcr Rangers )

Reds are delighted to welcome another Community Club to the local rugby scene. Lots of work being going on in Manchester (as well as Salford & Trafford) through SCR Foundation and its great to see a new club on the scene, which will no doubt go far!! Please do the honours and like the page!

Rangers Coach is Steve Molloy

there is more to Salford at the moment than just going around blagging Sam Tomkins

SCR Manchester Development Officer, Andy Connaughton ..has been coaching in Manchester for almost 2 years and he said “after almost 2 years of developing Rugby League in Schools throughout Manchester, it’s great to see a club being developed at Belle Vue and I’m happy to be a part of it. I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead and I hope that some of the players will be Salford City Reds Super League stars of the future”.

Will they be another nail in the Oldham coffin?

Why should they be? Oldham is not Manchester.

Why should they be? Oldham is not Manchester.

If anything, it's more likely to benefit them and Rochdale, assuming they are both still in C1.

Another nearby (ish) team to have as a "derby" rival and much more scope for travelling support, it's probably only 1/2 an hour's drive away.

try telling that to the many thousands of MUFC fans there - and now suddenly (wonder why?!!) MCFC fans!

Saying that though - I dont think a new semi pro club in Gorton would impact on Oldham rugby. Be another local derby if they're still scuffling along in C1 for starters

People in Oldham might support Manchester based sides at soccer but rugby league is something else. I don't think Manchester Rangers are suddenly going to become the new Wigan.

By that reckoning, Bishop's Stortford is in Manchester, and so is Singapore!

Not suddenly no, but over 20 years or so, why not?

you never know! I hope to see the mighty Manchester Rangers one day humbled by Oldham at a sellout Old Trafford Grand Final ;-)

It's possible but not likely, it's fair competition. But I'd bear in mind that Oldhamers could already go and watch Salford, Wigan etc but seem not to in large numbers.
