Radio 2's Top 100 Favourite Albums

36 posts in this topic

Here's the list.

This is what you get when the public are allowed to vote - Dido beats the Beatles and the Stones, while Celine Dion just pips The Who. :D

To be fair, there are some excellent albums in that list. I own 20 of them - what's your score?

It's a Rick "Ghastly" Astley of a list... how can Van Morrison be represented by Avalon Sunset and not Astral Weeks or Veedon Fleece? David Bowie by Let's Dance and not, say, Hunky Dory? And Bob Dylan's Blonde On Blonde falls just below Kylie Minogue's Fever!

In memory of the recently departed Richard Griffiths: "Fork it!"

The only Van Morrison song I've give house-room to is this mighty poetic ode. :D

A question, though. What is Radio 2? Is it like The Light Programme?

Nine.

Most of the others: not only do I not have them, but I don't want them.

How many of those artists have any element of "danger" about them? Very very few.

No punk.

The majority comprise a relentless list of Mam and Dad music, something to play when you're doing the crossword ... and, yes, I am 58.

Hence Radio 2

11, what an absolutely appalling list of mediocrity and general pap. No Clash, No Specials, No Sex Pistols, nothing cutting edge, just pap.

Any list of the Top 100 albums that only has one Bob Dylan album in it isn't worth looking at!

Looking at the date it was announced I can only assume it was all a very clever joke that I don't quite get.

To be fair, it does state quite clearly at the top of the list that "we asked listeners to pick their favourite from our list of Radio 2's Top 100 Most Played Albums." So it isn't claiming to be a definitive list of the best albums ever made, just a list of the ones played a lot on Radio 2 that Radio 2 listeners like the most, hence its overall blandness. I doubt Radio 2 have ever played a Clash, Specials or Sex Pistols record, and why would they, it isn't really what Radio 2 is there for.

Musical snobbery is alive and well though, always good to see. I think rap is a lot better than people of my generation would give it credit for, even though it isn't for me and I don't really "get it".

As Dara O'Briain says, "I don't understand how these sound waves going into my ear can be judged by someone else as being better than the same sound waves going into their ear", but that's scientist comedians for you.

Au contraire, you are obviously not familiar with Radio 2. I have heard all of those on radio 2, and not just on their late night specialist shows. If you listen to Jeremy Vine's lunchtime show he will often play songs from the Pistols and the Clash as he's an old punk and proud of it. The weird thing can be going into something like White Riot after an ABBA ballad!

16. What a rubbish list. I think channel 4 did another one a few years back that was pretty good. Had OK computer at no 1 just pipping DSOTM.

But doesn't that really signal the final death of punk and all it was supposed to be about (whatever that was), when it is deemed bland enough to be played on Radio 2? Wouldn't Joe Strummer be spinning in his grave at the very thought of White Riot being played alongside ABBA?
