Radio 2's Top 100 Favourite Albums

36 posts in this topic

It's a bit rubbish that Coldplay topped the list, but there are some fantastic albums in there - What's Going On, Pet Sounds, Songs in the Key of LIfe, C'est Chic (classic disco-pop), Diana (ditto) etc. I'd argue that 'Behaviour' is a better Pet Shop Boys album than 'Actually', though the latter IS a great pop album and features some of their best songs (Kings Cross, What Have I Done To Deserve This, I Want To Wake Up etc). The inclusion of Bowie's 'Let's Dance' isn't that odd - after all, for all its faults it was his most successful pop album.

That's the point, really, this is a POP list by and large - hence why 'Purple Rain' is on the list rather than 'Sign 'O' The Times' etc.

I'd argue that ...

... popular music lost its soul when it was decided that albums were more worthy of respect than singles.

A question, though. What is Radio 2? Is it like The Light Programme?

We could always do our own list, combined. I nominate Hindle to set it up for us.

I found myself listening to the countdown whilst driving home on Monday. I stuck with it out of morbid curiosity, just to find out what the top placings were. Popular music is officially dead, and not just because of Simon Cowell.
