Shock! Soward to Blue Mountain Team - Widdop to Dragons

15 posts in this topic

Just been announced that Jamie Soward has signed a four year deal with Penrith from start of 2014 season onwards.

Cor!

Some are questioning  - does this mean Dragons will push harder to tempt Todd Carney to them even though Sharks say they want him to stay?

Talking of St George Illawarra:

St George Illawarra are reportedly on the verge of signing Canberra back rower Joel Thompson to a three-year $1.3 million deal.

Crocodile tears from Phil Gould

Well, the Panthers just bought the best kicking game in the business.I feel sorry for the St George fans and I really mean that. That's just a part of our game these days. When you're in a rebuilding phase, the best place to get them is from successful clubs. But we needed Jamie Soward in our club.

A little snippet by Gould -

"We've got a playmaker academy at the Panthers we've been running for a couple of years now.

"I've got a great coach there in Trent Barrett who is helping out.

"All our junior rep teams are doing extremely well.

"I've got some potentially very good halves coming through the system but they're four or five years away from NRL.

"To have people like Trent Barrett and Jamie Soward in your club, that's about development and bringing them through."

So.................... Their 'next generation' is going to be a product of two ex Dragons

Now that is a bigger shock - to me.

Really surprised with this one, hadnt heard any rumours or suggestions about Widdop going to the Dragons so a bit of a shock! Had assumed he would probably stay at the Storm or potentially go to the Broncos as has been rumoured.

Means there could be an all English(!) halves combination of Widdop and Chase at St George next year!

Not if Dragons have any sense!

I'm guessing there are various elements to Gareth Widdop's move next season - money, fresh challenge, stepping out of the shadow of the big names at Storm etc.

All the same I'm disappointed as Storm is my club and I enjoyed seeing Widdop develop as a player with us and produce some great moves. Will be really sorry to see him go.

Not if Dragons have any sense!

Sense and Dragons of late should not be in the same sentence. Dragons CEO Peter Doust has a lot to answer to.

I see that, having not tempted Craig Bellamy to join, have re-signed Steve Price to carry on for another two years.

I thought Widdop was found a little bit wanting last season during the Origin series and when Slater was injured! Perhaps he is finding it hard to come up to expectations of himself especially if he stayed! Probably the right decision for him and no doubt a lot more money than Storm could offer, he can always come back especially if can step up to the next level!

I wouldn't hold ya breathe waiting for that to happen. The next group on the production line is already in Quality Control B)
