How did either Rugby code let this guy slip through the net?

Probably doesn't have the engine for league, too athletic for union... :P

I actually thought this was referring to Lawrence Okoye the discuss thrower.

Karl Pryce is 6'5", built like the proverbial outhouse and can run like the wind.

However, it's what's inside that counts.

Regarding this lad, I can't help but feel that, if he had anything about him, in this country he wouldn't have been playing basketball at 18.

Can he catch?

I think you need reasonable handling skills to play basketball.

This lad lived in Gran Canaria for a couple of years.

Most likely will have caught something then.

Three other Brits available in the draft this year - Tom Wort, Eze Oboria and Abdul Kennah. The first two are rated as possibles for the later rounds.

Wort wasn't drafted; Okoye signs as a free agent with the 49ers.

What does being drafted mean? Is it like at school where the captains take it in turns to pick the best players?

Worst team gets first pick of the eligible players, second worst gets second pick. After 32 goes in the first round (there are 32 teams), they start again. There were 7 rounds this year.

So I take it teams don't have an academy system like in Rugby or Soccer. Are the universities their equivalent to the academies. What about those players who may not be academically able but would be excellent players none the less. Seems a waste of talent.

Teams don't have academies, or even reserve teams.

University football is more popular in more places than the NFL but, and you might enjoy googling this, the players are unpaid 'student athletes'.  It makes shamateurism look honest.

Progression is from high school to college (university) and then from university to professional.  And, trust me, no university is turning down an athlete cos they're dumb.

Wort signed for Tennessee Titans after the draft. So three guys signed to NFL teams, to go with Jack Crawford who was drafted by Oakland two years back.

There's a few more dotted around college teams as well.
