Siddal 16 Thatto Heath 28...A fully deserved win by the st helens outfit,Siddal were totaly disjointed ,but take nothing away from Thatto who played an excellent game ,defensive they were solid and attacking clinical ,where as siddal made far too many errors...No 12 from Thatto was outstanding..this year is going to change week to week

Leigh Miners 36 v 24 Rochdale Mayfield

Leigh Miners booked themselves a place in the quarter finals of the Conference Challenge Trophy yesterday afternoon with a 36-24 victory against a spirited Rochdale Mayfield outfit. The opening quarter of the game was a close affair with both teams battling it out in the warm conditions, Miners opened the scoring after only a couple of minutes when Scott O'Brien's cross field kick was picked up by Sean McDonald who then offloaded to Jonny Youds who raced into score under the sticks, Youds converting his try to give the score 6-0. Mayfield drew level on twenty minutes when their Fijian loose forward barged over from close range to score under the sticks to give the score 6-6. Scott O'Brien put Miners back in front five minutes later scoring out on the left hand side to make the score 10-6 and from then on the rest of the half was all Miners as they run in three more first half tries all down the right hand side. The first coming from winger Gareth Paine quickly followed by a close range effort from Liam Coleman, the final try of the half was scored by centre Adam Thomason who sneaked over in the corner, Youds only managing to convert the Paine try of the touchline to give the half time score 24-6.

Miners continued from where they left off early in the second half when winger Andrew Hodson finished off after some good play down the left, Youds adding the extras to make the score 30-6, with Miners in control it looked as though they would go on a record a comfortable victory but after they started to go away from what they was doing well Miners invited Mayfield back into the game and when they scored three converted tries to pull the score back to 30-24 it really was game on with still over ten minutes remaining. Fortunately for Miners they weathered the storm and kept Mayfield out for the remainder of the game before finally sealing the tie in the last minute when Liam Coleman went over for his second of the game, Youds adding the extras to give the final score 36-24 and put Miners into the last eight at home against second division Shaw Cross Sharks.

Next week Miners are away to Thatto Heath Crusaders.
