Another moron opens a car door without looking..

If you make the assumption that the cars are all going about 30mph, as it looks like they're not going that slowly, then the bike is going a good bit faster.  The car door opener has a serious part to play in this but then you have to look at the bike's speed before the full condemnation goes to the car driver.  If the rider had been going at the speed of traffic then he'd probably have had enough time to stop or avoid it.  This was a massive part of my motorbike training in the army, defensive riding all the time and if you don't then don't blame anyone else if you get flattened.

 

There are far too many car drivers who just have no clue how to work with motorbikes, and normal bikes come to that, and I agree that there needs to be some recognition of the number of riders killed or injured by idiot drivers but then they lose sympathy when they break the law themselves.  I saw one incident in London last year when a bike was flattened, rider was uninjured, by a bus because the cyclist went through a red light; the cyclist was ranting at the bus driver and called the police shouting at them to arrest the bus driver for trying to kill him.  A few of us hung around waiting for the police to arrive and let them know who really was at fault.

Never underestimate the stupidity if drivers. I see things that would make you cringe on a daily basis. It's not that they are malicious, just incompetent.

Why was the biker overtaking on the inside? Sure the guy who opened the door was wrong not to look, but the biker was at least a bit stupid to drive into a narrow gap between vehicles, leaving himself no room for manoeuvre (sp?). Like ckn says, "defensive riding" is the only way to stay healthy on a bike.

Absolutely. Riding in the 'door zone' is asking for trouble but sometimes unavoidable. For a motorcyclist it is easy to 'take the lane' and ride defensively, when I do it on my push bike it tend to get abuse and some drivers use their vehicles in an aggressive to intimidate me.

Not at all.  If the cyclist is not at fault then he'll get my support, especially over utter stupidity such as a driver opening a door without looking but if he's breaking the law or the Highway Code then he loses sympathy.  If he's overtaking on the inside, speeding (most likely) and on a congested street with parking like that then he gets almost none at all.

Said as someone who has held a motorcycle license since 1990 and has been knocked off my bike twice by idiots who haven't seen me on a roundabout, never mind the countless other times when only my defensive riding saved me from a driver who just didn't see me.

It is vital that every story where a motorist is proven to be at fault, as they are in the overwhelming majority of incidents involving themselves and other road users, that anecdotal stories are provided straight away as a balance.

It's a law of the internet.

There needs to be a law brought in specifically for this, I reckon. 

 

Summat needs doing to wake these cretins up.

There already is in the UK, mate. It's an offence to open a car door in a manner that endangers another road user. It's an offence even if there's no collision.

 

However, I would imagine convictions are like rocking horse poo.

Biker was speeding and undertaking, deserves what he got.

Another road user's stupidity is no justification for committing a traffic offence.

I overtake in the inside because that is where the cycle lane is. Unfortunately it is also where people open their car doors and park their cars.

If you're in a cycling lane and someone opens the door on you then I think the law should allow you to shut it again with their head in it.

As a biker myself, I'd say the person opening the door was at fault for the incident. The biker didn't however leave himself any margin to manouvre however, due to his positioning and speed. As CKN says, if he'd have ridden more defensively, he may have avoided the incident. Personally, I'd rather have been going slower and further away from the parked cars, in case someone did precisely that. Rule number one for me, always ride as if everyone is out to get you. :ph34r: :lol:

What about the brain dead lump of humanity who thought that they were far more important than the other people in the line of traffic and decided to undertake ( also illegal) at speed,just so they could get a few cars lengths ahead.

I love it when they quote smidsy well if you weren't approaching Mach 3 then maybe people would have a chance of seeing you coming

For all you lot trying to put up some sort of defence for the car door opener, using the bike's speed in your justification, what if it had been a paramedic on a motorbike speeding to an accident?

 

They cut up the inside and use any means available to overtake traffic.

 

Anyway, I'm not sure the bike was travelling all that fast, had he been doing around 40, as has been implied, he would have ended up cartwheeling down the road.

Emergency vehicles have a loud siren and flashing blue light to warn other road users that they are approaching.

Do you really think that the riders behaviour did not contribute to this collision.

They do indeed but I feel motorbikes are loud enough as it is, for the door opener not to hear one approaching suggests they would still have done the same regardless.

 

I think the rider's behaviour contributed to this collision, only in that he was there to be hit.

 

I cannot comprehend people defending the door opener in any circumstance. It's just laziness and a complete disregard for anybody else on the road and shows an "I can't be ar sed to wait for anybody else as I'm more important" attitude.

The only thing that contributed to this collision was the driver not checking their mirrors before opening the door. The motorcyclists as many have pointed out could've guarded against this but the car driver was 100% at fault.

Given it clearly isn't in the UK,how do you know that the undertaking wasn't legal? The rider may not have been riding in a manner appropriate for the circumstances but it is still the responsibility of someone opening their car door into the road to check it is clear to do so.

While not condoning the actions, wearing t-shirt and jeans isn't the best on a bike IMO. Although I've no idea what motocyclists should wear on a warm day.

Also illegal....in the Ukraine where this incident took place?

Filtering is not illegal in the UK but the guy in Kiev was going too fast.
