Could someone please explain the Italian Rugby League split

11 posts in this topic

Just wanting to know the background info in regards to why there's a split in Italian Rugby League, in layman terms. Who are the main players, where are they based and what are the chances of both bodies uniting, it would certainly strengthen League in ITaly.

Could someone explain why it is only Rugby that seems to split. Russia, USA, Italy and a few more.

Union, soccer, tiddlywinks never seem to have that problem.

Are we just too stroppy?

I would imagine a strong international governing body helps.  Either you are the national governing body or they will ignore you.

That's exactly it.  If you get the international governing body sanction in most sports then you play and your players play in the international game, if you split off then you'd be as well calling yourself another name.

That also has additional problems because national governing bodies in rugby league just do not have the protection and funding that the likes of FIFA and the IRB can give their constituent bodies.

Neither the Aussies nor the RFL would willingly give up power to a RLIF with proper governance rights and powers.  Short-sighted and not likely to change any time soon.

I agree that a strong RLIF would almost certainly eradicate most of these problems!

Rugby league is a small sport outside its traditional heartlands. In places like Russia, the USA etc, it often seems to be one egotist with money running the show. Splits are fairly inevitable as people don't like being dictated to.

Splits are not unique to areas outside the heartlands, e.g. RFL/barla, SL/ Championships, Aussies v everybody else.

That could happen gradually though. There is nothing to stop decisions at the RLIF initially consisting of the RFL and ARLC (which would bve an imporovement on the current incarnation of the RLIF) so at least there is an agreement on a common rule book, then gradually bringing in other national governing bodies to be become part of the decision making process.

There is an effective equivalent split happening in US rugby union it seems.  Grand Prix Rugby involved there too.

Other sports have had simialr issues and relatively recently. Splits can arise for a variety of reasons. Even the birth BARLA  was a positive thing for RL but far too many view it with contempt.
