Looking at the NCL website the results in the South division were

Bristol Sonics 24 - Northampton Demons 0

Hallam Eagles 38 - Leicester Storm 12

St Albans Centurions 24 Nottingham Outlaws 46

It's a long shot but was the Bristol score co-incidentally 24-0 or was there a problem?

Northampton couldn't raise a side. I've still no idea why last week's Northampton v Sleaford game was 24-24 without it being played - I think the only reason it would make sense is if Sleaford's transport broke down on the way to the game. I'd still like to see points deductions for sides that don't travel.

Like others have mentioned, Northampton couldn't travel due to a lot of injuries. Hopefully they'll be OK for the rest of the season - they have Sheffield up next.

Sonics' seconds lost 22-14 to Old Pats in a dramatic game in Cheltenham. It was held up for nearly an hour by a serious injury to one of our lads (ambulance job, they thought he might have a serious neck/back injury - luckily just a bit of nerve damage, but it pays to be careful with these things). When we restarted there were five tries in about 20 minutes. Stupidly hot day as well.

Northampton took a lot of injuries against St. Albans

They had a side to play Bristol but the committee is extremely caustious about sending a very young / weakened side to play against some semi pro players, especially since our captain came 90 from death as the result of a fair tackle a few months ago. A 7 hour op, 6 pints of blood in his stomach and now no spleen means he'll never play again.

The plan was to play the side (of whom have all mostly played midlands premier this year) against Birmingham. Unfortunately the RFL would not allow this. The Demons were happy to play Birmingham and give them the points but the RFL surprisingly then couldn't find a referee, hence 40 players didn't get game time this week.

I'm not surprised - a few officials are leaving the game (me, for example) and this week was the Festival of World Cups, its the start of holiday time and of course the NCL runs in summer now and takes a lot of northern refs/TJs out of contention. It's a shame, though.

I can't criticise the club's decision - there is a duty of care to the players that overrides any loss of points.

I've got respect for teams that put the welfare of players first. It's a hard enough game and players (however old they are) know when they are ready to step up. It does allow you to test yourself but individuals can only make that call.

I am worried though about the lack of match officials and I feel it will only get worse. This could come and bite the game at tier 3 and below very quickly as its not just the young people who are walking away

The lack of match officials is also down to locality of match official courses, we have at least 8 people wanting to take this course and we did ask last season if one could be held at Bromsgrove and was told its not possible , then find out one was held at Northampton later on that year with less people taking part... now yes most of these wanting to take part are players so wouldn't be available saturdays but would be for junior games on a sunday.

I want to do my L2 Coaching Course but none are running in the London area this year...
