Where do France go if Toulouse don't get in sl

231 posts in this topic

Would they try to form there own league with catalans, a merged asc limoux, tarn, tolouse, fcl out of narbonne and possible Lyon.

Seems there options are limited, try to get league to wages similar to level like championship or a little higher.

If Toulouse are not admitted i expect the Dragons to go under within 2/3 seasons which would be a disaster.

There is no hope of there ever being a fully professional french league what we need is more french teams in SL.

CM

Agreed. There isn't the money and rugby union is just to big compared to league in France, it's a bit like new Zealand they tried to have a professional/semi-professional national league(lion red cup) and it failed miserably due to lack of money, coverage and crowds. 2 or 3 French teams in super league is the only way rugby league can grow in France and for the French national team to become more competitive.

What has Toulouse's likely non-admission have to do with Catalans. No reason to say that they would go bust without Toulouse.

I would go as far as saying Rugby League in the northern hemisphere needs Toulouse in SuperLeague, not just Catalans. They also need a concerted effort on making sure at least 10 of Wales under 18's are signed to Super League teams every year.

Really don't see why everyone wants another French team in, another expensive trip for away fans to pay for and another fixture where no away fans turn up. Hardly any good for finances of clubs or supporters!!

Compared to Soccer RL fans get an easy ride, 2 trips to France a year isn't so bad.

Toulouse should be in a franchised 12 team league with no P&R. Cas, Wakey and Hull KR to drop out. Use any spare money to market London and the game with clubs still receiving £1.2m. £2.6m a year for marketing with London receiving another £1m should help.

How can and why should cas, wakey and hull kr be punished for not being "sexy" enough compared to Toulouse, London and whoever else. Decisions like that would not only make us more of a laughing stock but could be the final straw for some fans even some not supporters of cas, wakey and hull kr. It would probably be the final nail for me.

They should certainly be working towards it and really comes down to BEIN sports and how much they'd be willing to invest. I have heard that BEIN are bidding for Top 14 exclusive rights and if they are not successful they'll put extra money into French League, who knows what will happen but it sounds like there's potential there with that outlet. Should Canal Sports lose union rights then maybe there's an avenue there also.

But thinking innovatively the sport over there needs to find alternative ways of broadcasting which don't require the buy in of these TV stations, they can't just wait for a TV contract and with the web it's possible.

I do think that Carlos Zalduendo is working towards this in some sense, a more national competition including Lyon, Albi and Bordeaux next year and talk of others, Pia dropping out would've played into his hands. But there are enough area/cities with a history of league in France to form the basis of a professional competition. Again, the issue is not gonna be the local Maire's coz they are very supportive, it'll be TV coverage.

I do think that the RFL and Super League strategy of 'peril' with regards to on field competition could be perilous for Cats and TO and so it's important that Carlos and the french game map their own destiny.

An initial pro comp could start out with the following teams:

Catalan Dragons

Toulouse Olympique

Avignon Bisons

Aquitaine Leopards (playing at Agen)

Albi (Tarn)

Lyon

Bordeaux

Paris

Bullseye!! It comes across as gimmicks and ruins the earthy tradition of the game.

Wakey have been a breath of fresh air this year

It's so much better when you can simply get the bus to the neighbouring village to play your fiercest rivals. It's the future.

Agreed. Social engineering in rugby league doesn't work, wishing for teams in London, Paris, Barcelona, Dublin etc to be successful over long established and small town clubs like cas, wakey, Leigh etc is pie in the sky stuff. We aren't in a position to drive away supporters of these clubs and even if we were I'd still oppose it.

If we want to have a vibrant French RL we should give Toulouse all the support it needs to be successful in Super League.

If we're comfortable with allowing French RL to die a slow death we should slam the door in their faces.

It's a simple choice.

I'm all for another French team. But it has to be done in a genuine way. No team can be protected from relegation etc. it does not work & continues to breed the wrong behaviours.

I think Bradford should have paid the ultimate price. It's the only way that everyone in the sport will do things the right way

But Toulouse is already a rugby league area. It's not 'pie in the sky', it's a case of not squandering the few natural resources we possess.

Everybody is in agreement that the game needs more money. Like it or not, French TV is an avenue for more income. Catalans v Toulouse can possibly draw 20,000 for derbies 5-10 years - people who were not watching the game 10 years ago. England v France could become the Northern Hemisphere's version of Origin if France became very competitive. Toulouse do not have to draw on the small pool of English players.

Catalans and Toulouse need to be in SL and permanently excluded from relegation. If Duport, Bosc, Casty, Escare, Pellisier, Fakir, Elima became available on the open market many SL clubs would bid for them. Within a few years we would hope this could be doubled or tripled.

It is a no-brainer to get them in.

Everybody says that but to what degree. Featherstone and Leigh are RL areas. Do Toulouse draw any better than them. When Toulouse were playing at the same level, I,e, Championship, what were their crowds like. I seem to remember they were  between 1 and 2 thousand. If so where is the belief that they can draw 10,000 crowds to enable them to be a competitive SL team, It seems to me that Toulouse is much more of a RU and soccer heartland than is Toulouse.

I am not completely against a Toulouse SL team but to seems to me there is a lot of false optimism as to the likely success of such a team.

I want Toulouse in super league but they must play by the same rules as everybody else i.e. if they finish last they get relegated.
