Keep an open mind

I've been to Cuba and they flog the Guevara image for all its worth

I've been to the shrine and everything

I've even read Bolivian diaries

But I don't think anyone even those who admire him see him as some kind if saint

I really would like to know who bb reveres and draws his/her inspiration from who he she admires

Could be his/hers Dad

I agree, the beautification of him is nothing to do with him. It's Castro the politician who is responsible.

the thread was about people using an image they know nothing about, not realy about the rights and wrongs of the politics, who do I admire? prob ordinary quiet gentle family men who get up at 6am to work and provide and go through life hurting no one.

And not women who do the same?

People who know a great deal about Guevara still hold him in high esteem

You said it wasn't about the rights and wrongs of the politics in that case what does it matter?

And if it isn't in your eyes about the rights, wrongs and the politics why did you call him a terrorist and the butcher if cabana?

Edit I have a lot of time for Guevara and I know a fair bit about him, and im not naive enough to beatify him but I can understand why a lot of people in Cuba do and I can understand why people have used what is one of the most famous images of the twentieth century. I've got a drawer full of merchandise in the attic if you're interested

History is written by the winners.

I reckon at least 60% of "icons" turn out to have feet of clay.

No it isn't

Propaganda is written by the winners

Are there no German historians?

Regardless of the arguments for and against Che Guevara his modern image is purely a logo. The vast majority that wear it aren't even really trying to be political aside from some vague notion of rebellion and revolution against the current system.

If anything and perhaps ironically, the popularity of his image has more to do with our celebrity and label obsessed consumer culture than any political statement. The Guevara image is a brand that is worn in much the same way any other brand is worn.

In the same vein, a few years ago shops were selling red and blue coloured clothes covered with CCCP and the hammer and sickle. There would be very few people prepared to wear this as a statement of their political orientation and others would see as akin to wearing a Nazi symbol. However, it kind of worked (although not nearly as successfully as Che) as a nostalgic symbol and more so as a fashion item.

I completely agree with the idea that most people martyred and admired have their demons if you look into it and often end up being nothing like how they are viewed. Even somebody like Mother Teresa had little in common with the public's perception of her.

And that sums the point up quite eloquently
