Back Row Forward

Harry Jepson Trophy

28 posts in this topic

Just wondered if anyone knows what's happening?

Which leagues feed into it? Any clubs already confirmed? I know the Scottish Grand Final was a couple of weeks ago, North East was this weekend and London is next weekend.

What dates are the games to be played on?

There's usually a lot more conversation about this on here by now.

Midlands Final is next week. I guess Midlands, London, North East and Scotland feed in but I'm not sure.

I assume there are semis on 31st/1st September, final the week after.

Edit: According to the calendar we got back in Dec 2012 the HJ Trophy has 3 rounds. I didn't think Yorkshire and North West were included but perhaps I'm wrong.

My understanding is 3 rounds - weekends of 7&8, 14&15, & final 21&22 of September

So must be 8 leagues filtering in?

Southern (London) Premier

South East Reginal

East Reginal

Assume South West Regional?

Will need help with the other 4?

West of England regional winners should be involved - the league was offered, and accepted, a place in the comp when it was discussed earlier in the year. The winners were Old Pats from Cheltenham, who are mainly a union club, so we'll wait and see if they step forward when the HJ Trophy starts in a few weeks.

We really need to get some consistency going here.

If the competition is based on inviting one per region (and I don't have a problem with that) then it would be logical if the best division in each region was called the Premier Division. It's confusing that the East region uses the London website so you might think it's a regional competition below that region's Premier.

The league names are a bit of a nonsense, I grant you that.  However, the top division in the East Regional Leagues is the East Premier.  However, given the London & SE RL guys manage the competition and lots of those teams were involved with the SE setup, there appears to be crossover where none actually exists.

I think East Midlands reps will be Northampton "A" as the highest league finisher in the area, although they have been knocked out of the play-offs. Telford topped the league but it could be the Grand Final winner, both of the finalists being from the West Midlands, who plays in the HJ Trophy.

South West Grand Final

Cornish Rebels v Devon Sharks

Sunday August 18

Polson Bridge, Launceston

Kick-off 2.30pm

I wonder if the South West rep team will play in the HJ?

Do Northampton first team have a game that day?

What rules are in place to prevent them playing a full strength team - they play NCL if I'm not mistaken?

Are these games to be played at neutral venues or is the first round played as drawn with the first team listed getting home advantage?

They probably don't as the season has finished and I don't think they made the play-offs. Not sure about the rules.

Anyone know when the draws will be announced?  Will it be WoE [Cheltenham Old Pats] vs SW [Devon Sharks] like last year?

If Cheltenham Old Pats can't get a side together would Oxford be able to take their place?

BARLA rules in this situation are worth looking at and I think you will find a fair method and protect against cowboys.

Just saying like :rtfm: and no it's not a winter/summer thingy just a little bit of advice that's worth looking at.

I agree Jim. Most sports have these kind of rules and I think the summer RFL leagues should look at implementing something similar with consistency across the board.

The Midlands meeting at least will have some discussion over this I'm sure - after an interesting couple of weeks regarding player eligibility...

To BackRowForward, yes it is ridiculous that there are no Scottish teams

To DaveH, yes Aberdeen are disappointed but not surprised, however still proud to have reached the level of Scottish champions in just 3 years since we started and have been in finals every year

What Aberdeen has done in 3 seasons is amazing. We are the largest club in Scotland. We are the Scottish Champions. We have players in every Scotland squad possible. We support development of the game locally through schools links and have worked with local schools to help with their Saltire Schools Cup campaigns (details below)

Aberdeen Grammar School: (U15 and U17 2011 Champions)
Westhill Academy  (U15 2011 Runners-up, U17 2012 and 2013 Champions, U13 2013 Champions in first year the competition was run at this age group)
Since Aberdeen Rugby League Club started the Saltire Schools U17 Cup has never left the North of Scotland

Sad that we are not in the Harry Jepson Trophy having earned our place as Scottish Champions but we'll get over it and we'll be even stronger next season

That is sad too and not good for UK development of the game... unless Welsh teams are happy not to be included in the draw. Certainly Aberdeen assumed that they would be in the draw and hence the disappontment.

Glos Warriors confirmed as our entrant.

I thought that's what would happen.  Lets just hope Glos have gotten over their in-fighting from earlier this year and it doesn't end up with them travelling with Kirk Lewis, Ash Lewis and all of Kirk's sons, daughters & concubines to make up Glos's squad.

I suppose the only alternative at the moment is to enter the National Cup. That might give it a bit of a boost.
