What Do We Expect?

16 posts in this topic

Just a bit of a different take on the other topic.

RL fans seem to be disappointed in almost everything at times. But what is it that people want exactly?

I'm not trying to have a dig at people. I'm just genuinely curious as to what the game needs to achieve to make people happy. Not even bothered about suggestions as to how to achieve them!

What is it that we want?

All I want Wellsy is what I see virtually every match I watch whether it's a lowly amateur game or a Test match. One hundred per cent commitment and effort from the twenty six players on the pitch. I'd also love the rest of the population to see and appreciate what we all see as a fantastic sport that is honest in almost all aspects of play.

What I want is a stable structure that encourages growth of the fan base overall, allows clubs to heavily invest in youth development and infrastructure and for the international game to given the ultimate priority (so barring the last point, what we have)

What I expect is a panicked short-termism that will set the game back, prove costly or even fatal to some heartland clubs and benefit few expect those clubs currently at the top of the game while youth development and the international game are sidelined

Lots of free flowing tries from a team in their pomp.

Tight defences that don't let anything in.

A team in ascendancy turning the screw and extracting the largest victory.

Tight games where the result is uncertain to the last second.

A truly global with support in major metropolitan areas.

My village club to be in the top flight.

Consistent refereeing bit letting players get away with nonsense at the play the ball or forward passes.

Officials that let the game flow.

A strong RFL who organise the game and dictate the system.

My views listened to then my idea used.

The best players in the world playing in super league.

An end to overseas players.

A professional game with top quality stadia, facilities and staff.

Cheap tickets and no corporate nonsense.

A top flight league with a sponsor.

No sponsorship from companies I don't thing are big enough are aren't paying enough.

More positivity from journalists.

Less of this rose tinted spectacles nonsense from the media.

Am I more or less right?

The game delivers so many good games and its fair few classics that sometimes I think supporters expectations are too high. If the majority of games were turgid boor fests (like some other footballing codes), then fans would probably appreciate the above average games much more.

We also have a hang over from the games localised past, Some people still think the game can carry on with a pit village culture and see no need for these modern stadia and this new fangled marketing. Because we never really had to compete with union and soccer 20 years ago some people still don't get it that in this day and age we do.

Also some people just like moaning.

How is the international game being sidelined?

Ultimately I'm not that bothered about structures and stuff. As long as there are games staged each week, with a few of them televised I will keep watching and enjoying the sport of Rugby League. No structure will put me off watching the game.

I agree that International RL should have more focus, we either want to develop the likes of Scotland, Ireland and Wales, or we don't lets stop fannying about with it and treat it seriously, or just not bother at all.
