NZ Warriors land Tomkins

22 posts in this topic

In what can only be considered a coup, NZ Warriors have pulled off a masterstroke signing Wigan Warriors ace Sam Tomkins.

The expensive deal is said to be a world record one.

It's not confirmed how much but some think £700,000 (about $1.3m NZD; about $1.2 AUD)

Wigan have also got the right to have first option to re-sign Tomkins on if decides to return to Super League in the UK.

Wigan have signed Matt Bowen from Cowboys hoping to get that surge of quality that he's shown in recent NRL games.

He goes with the best wishes of the Wigan club.

He'll be rubbing shoulders with Kiwityke and Simon (Kerr) in no time, no doubt!

Auckland here he comes!!! (Well after the World Cup games)

Hmmmm as we all know this as been the worst kept secret of all time! : )

Sammy will be sadly missed, but we wish him every success with his new team.

But before he leaves we have a Grand Final to sort out!!!!!!!  : )

Sammy as had an excellent final season.........Challenge Cup winner, taking part in a Grand Final next wk end and a RWCup to take part in! Not bad eh?!  ;)

Maybe for Sam it'll be a case of once a Warrior, always a Warrior!

Good luck in the GF

Personally think he's heading for a tougher place & not sure if he'll cut it ?

Some of the petulance I've seen him display will not win over many ?

He's received a lot of stick, often from opposition fans who'd give their right hands to have him in their team.

I know what you mean though. I guess it's hard growing up in the public eye with a lot of pressure and media attention.

That will only increase in the NRL spotlight.

If he gets the right platform though I reckon he'll shine.

Hopefully he'll make his debut in the Auckland Nines.

Can't wait for Sam to arrive, Locke can be a great fullback, but is just too hot and cold.

I think most fullbacks run hot n cold & the greater the skill the more pronounced the mistakes / off games appear.

Young Sam has at times seemed 'it's all up to me' on field, which of course leads to missed chances / errors.

Well as a Warriors fan, they`re going to need a lot more than a class fullback and we all know their short comings by now as it`s been evident since day one when they played the Broncos in March,1995. It`s all in the top four inches and always has been. Good players badly let down by continual poor options and in a lot of cases, just switching off. This year they got thrashed 62-6 by an average Penrith outfit, then went on a seven match winning streak that included flogging the Broncos on their own midden,56-18,so their shortcomings are obviously not in actual ability. More good Aussie players are what`s needed, never mind what the locals think.

And there's the rub ! Lots of NRL clubs send their scouts to head hunt local kids, who then get put through a growing up system.

Is it the lack of local talent - Or the lack of a grow up system ?

I've done a lot of research on Tomkins since the signing rumours started.

He will be the perfect Fit for the NZwarriors and I expect that the strengths in the team will suit Tomkins game.

We need a brain on the field and Tomkins has that in spades , we need experience , and we need one more player that can pass the ball well to an under utilised outside backs.

The NZ warriors most of all need a good communicator with vision in that back line.

I really hope he gets unleashed on the NRL nines sides for the Warriors.

Auckland nines,,,, Dunedin,,,,Parramatta,,,,Eden Park,,,,Townsville Barrier Reef,,,,Wellington,,,,,Cronulla Beach,,,,Dragons Jubilee oval,,,Melbourne,,,,Eden Park11,,,,Hamilton,,,,

Gold Coast,,,Perth,,,Auckland,,,Brisvegas,,,,Canberra,,,Newcastle,,,Penrith... No this is not some sort of lucky prize winning holiday of a lifetime, this is the draw for the Warriors and where they will be playing next year.

Sam Tomkins wont know what hit him. He will think he died and went to heaven.

Even Matty Elliot the coach was exited about the draw.

Let's just hope they dont pack the swimming trunks and bucket and spade next year. Just pack a toothbrush and some cement. hehe

I think the Storm game in Melbourne is a Anzac game as well, that will be a eye opener for him as well.

Sam is in Auckland this week doing some promotional work with the NZ Warriors.

He moves to New Zealand properly in January.

Georgie Fame was supposed to be a pretty decent Rugby League player as a youngster.

Sam Tomkins in NZ Warriors kit to be worn during Auckland Nines comp

That nines Jersey Sam is wearing has no relation to the Clubs colours / history apart from blue being the colour of Auckland Rugby League team Historically ( a tenuous comparison at best ) it's all about Jesrey sales at the Warriors.

To be fair even though I don't like that we have so many strips , the Warriors makes more money from merhcandising sales than any other club in their competiton.

Good to have Sam here full time now , you would think a limited minutes , limited playing number version of the code will suit his free running game.

Johnson and Tomkins are the two Marquee players the NZW have put forward as Nines squad members , it will be very interesting to see.

The other Multi purpose player in the backs apart from Tomkins is Locke , there will be lots of scope to move those two around in a nines format if Locke is chosen.

Some clubs are taking it very seriously ( the Sharks have promised a iop line up by virtue of being seious about winning the money ).

Milford will rip this comp up.

As long as he's as committed at Raiders as he should be.
