MPs call on Virgin Media to show RLWC13 on Premier Sports

28 posts in this topic

Hope they do get onto Virgin media, but Greg Mullholland's comments really should have been aimed at the people responsible for sorting out this TV deal, or maybe the BBC for not showing more games, not Virgin Media.

"rugby league is one of the UK’s biggest sports, and to not have its world championships available to as wide an audience as possible in the host nation is lamentable."

"We know there are commercial aspects, but it is appalling that such an important event such as the Rugby League World Cup is simply not available as broadly as possible – particularly in the host nation."

(Here follows the full text of an important media release from the Parliamentary Rugby League Group)

The Parliamentary Group has today made public on its website (www.apprlg.org.uk) a letter to the Chief Executive of Virgin Media calling on the broadcaster to enable Premier Sports to be shown on the platform in time for RLWC13.

Premier Sports broadcast Championship and Championship One games and is broadcasting all World Cup matches, but despite three years of negotiation, the channel is still unable to be seen on Virgin Media meaning rugby league supporters and sports fans generally will miss the sport’s showpiece event and one of the biggest multinational sporting events this decade.

The letter from Group Chairman, Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland, calls for the decision to be addressed as a matter of urgency, in time for the tournament’s opening ceremony on October 26.

It makes note of the market Virgin Media enjoys in the north of England, rugby league’s heartland, and states “rugby league is one of the UK’s biggest sports, and to not have its world championships available to as wide an audience as possible in the host nation is lamentable.”

Speaking about the issue, Mulholland said, “this has been going on for too long.  There are calls on Virgin Media’s own online forums to show Premier Sports but it simply must be rectified before the World Cup starts.  We know there are commercial aspects, but it is appalling that such an important event such as the Rugby League World Cup is simply not available as broadly as possible – particularly in the host nation.”

The letter ends by calling on both parties to come to an agreement as soon as possible, in good time to show RLWC13.

Mulholland added: “this is a hugely important issue for Members within the Group and one we will continue to address in any way we can.”

On my PC and TV there is a HDMI connector.    I brought a cable and can watch on the TV screen what is on my PC.    You can also get converter cables if the PC doesn't have HDMI connector but most modern PCs and TVs have such.   Mind you depending on how techie you are how well it works will be dependent on your PC buffers otherwise it will be jerky.

Never tried it with Premier Sports but I do use it with BBC iplayer etc so don't see why same wouldn't work.    I think I will get a subscription to Premier Sport as I assumed you could only watch via Sky but now I know can get it on PC I'll be able to watch.

I am normally right behind this stuff but the World Cup organisers knew exactly what the limitations were when they sold the rights to Premier Sports. It would be nice to be on Virgin but if they are within their rights to do what they want.

Virgin have no obligation to show anything. The MPs should be targeting the BBC, they have 4 FTA channels and 3 red button channels which are usually filled with bizarre content or minority sports like field hockey. I can understand only the England matches on the main channels but they could easily have shown the rest of the RLWC on the red button or something.

Rugby league is a minority sport. The BBC are under no obligation to show any of the RLWC.

Nobody is under any obligation to show anything but why should that stop the RL Parliamentary Group from trying to expand the exposure of our game?

Well done to the MPs (and it's not often you will see me writing that) for at least trying to do something to change the situation.

was it this group that were campaigning for a nrw England RL anthem?

Surely they have better things to waste their time on instead of this rather embarrassing and simple statement.

They're MPs.  This is what they do between expense claims, porn viewing, alcoholism and affairs with researchers.

Echoing what was said above, I've connected the Premier player via an HDMI and it's great viewing.

Whilst pleased its being raised as an issue I find it hard to disagree with what you say. They knew the score when PS got the rights so its not really a surprise this is happening.

Now that's some job description.

I have just bought the online subscription for Premier Sports - quality picture! :D

The problem with the online service is that you have to watch the match live, their "on demand" system seems to take ages to update.

Now being reported on twitter by Loverugbyleague MD that this is now a done deal. Brilliant if true.

If I had a pound for every work colleague who's asked me in the last two or three weeks where they can watch the RLWC only for me to have to advise them it's on a  subscription sports channel that they as not regular RL fans have probably never heard of, I'd have about £13.. (you get the point)

I still insist that selling the rights to Premier Sports for the whole RLWC package (I know the England games are on BBC) is the biggest mistake of this event. Especially considering the interest it seems to have generated in this past week or so with friends and colleagues who wouldn't otherwise be that interested in Rugby League but will follow the International game in an event such as this.

I'm not on Virgin myself, but I really hope they manage to show it for free for the duration, but as other posters have quite rightly stated, they're under no obligation to do so.

Did anybody else want to show it?

I read somewhere (no idea how true it is) that Sky were willing to pay more for the rights but wouldn't let the BBC have any matches.
