Papalii robbed on Kangaroos tour

25 posts in this topic

Canberra back-rower Josh Papalii has been named as the Kangaroos player robbed on the Australian's first night out in Manchester ahead of the start of the Rugby League World Cup.

Kangaroos management say they are looking into the incident which occurred after a number of members of the 24-man squad visited a nightclub on Tuesday night after their arrival from Australia.

The Kangaroos camp confirmed a player had lost money but that the incident was unlikely to become a police matter due to "the practicalities of it all".

Australia enjoyed their first training session on Thursday but coach Tim Sheens has opted against playing a warm-up match ahead of their tournament opener against England in Cardiff Saturday week.

The Kangaroos will travel to Cardiff on Tuesday as they seek to wrest back the World Cup from defending champions New Zealand.

Josh Papalii  is not going to be in any of the main games though.

He is there for the experience and for the future.

I doubt the Kangaroos are going to be partying to hard on this trip.

Not if they keep getting mugged off in clubs

well there's no mention of "mugging" so make up your own mind what went on......in a nightclub.....money is lost.....and the aussie team don't want the police to get involved

Andrew Webster of the SMH said on a Sydney based radio station, that the incident occured whilst Papalii was getting money out of an ATM.

If I was targeting people at an ATM I would probably have given Papalii the swerve and waited for the next customer (not that I would rob anybody of course!).

I've seen plenty of blokes escorted to ATM's by a certain type of bird before.. and they didn't come out of no 'nightclub'..

Feel sorry for the lad but the arrogance of the Aussie management! Boys on the ######, no warm up game. God I hope they get smashed. What results do we need for them to meet and hopefully lose to the kiwis in the semis? Would love a kiwi England final

We need them to come 2nd in the group for them to face NZ in the semis. That is if NZ top their group and they both win their quarter finals.

So if England beat them in the opener we won't meet them until the final? What an opener it's going to be

abit of shortsighted of the organizers...should england top the group our 1/4 final is at wrexham...and australia, who'll finish 2nd play at wigan...

they obviously expect us to come 2nd

.......was he robbed of his Birth certificate too? He's a Kiwi isn't he??

Thanks for that saved me posing it. Correct if I am wrong, but hasn't Papalli already represented NZ? I was amazed when he played Origin as I imagined he had done the former and, would almost certainly have been with the NZ squad at this tournament.

From memory he signed a letter of allegiance to NZ but then changed to Oz when Big Mal got in his ear about playing for Queensland. Not sure he ever played for the kiwis at any level.

And there's a pic around of Benji in a Junior Kangaroos shirt.

No, Papalii has never played for the Kiwis. He moved to Australia/Queensland when he was 6.

I hope he plays next weekend, but I agree, it's unlikely.

He moved at aged 6? sounds like he has passed the three years in the country to become an Aussie.

How long did Chris Heighington live in England?

Rangi is a good traditional English name like Fa'asavalu is.

I have no problem with it.

Australia and NZ are countries built on immigration, they are bound to have residents born elsewhere that qualify for their adopted country.

Have to agree with this as both countries have used the full letter of the eligibility laws over the years.
