New nations join Rugby League International Federation

3 posts in this topic

Jamaica, Russia and Ukraine have been accepted as full members of the Rugby League International Federation.

The RLIF held its AGM in Cardiff on the eve of the World Cup opening ceremony and double-header.

A further trio - Canada, Latvia and Malta - have become affiliates of the European Federation.

All the noises I hear comming from Jamaica seem to indicate that they are moving in the right direction, same with Canada but it seems like Russia is a case of 1 step forwards and 2 steps back. I remember when they got huge crowds for the victory cup in Moscow a few years ago and there seemed to be great development in the tartarstan region of Russia.

Russia is undoubtedly moving forward at the moment.  Its not back to where it has been in recent years but the fact Russian RL is back to where it currently stands is due to the incredibly hard work (and stubborn natures) of a few folk over there.  Relying on sugar daddies with a penchant for throwing their dummies out of the pram didn't prove to be a good long-term strategy.  The new method may not be as flashy but it certainly has a better chance of long-term progress.
