Hearing news on Twitter that Steve has lost his fight with cancer in the early hours of this morning.

A truly inspirational man. Devastating if true.

Absolutely gutted.

Great player, fine fullback and a phenomenal human.

Gave a master class in how to carry yourself through adversity with humility, dignity and courage.

Will be sadly missed.

How very, very sad this news is.  I last spoke to him just before the St Helens 10k run back in March.  He'd been poorly the night before but had turned out to help pack all the goody bags (which is what me and quite a few others were doing at the time).  He couldn't run the race this year as he had last year but he still found the courage to turn up, pack some bags, chat to us volunteers and encourage everyone from the starting line.

As an example of the fighting spirit of humanity he was tremendous and surely a beacon to all those who find themselves in the vile grip of cancer or any life threatening illness.

My heart goes out to his family and friends, particularly his wife and children.  They did a sterling job in supporting him and being strong for him.  RIP Steve Prescott.

A very sad moment which should be recognised appropriately today at the KC.

Inspirational, brave, loyal, dedicated and a loving family man. He will be sadly missed by so many.

In a sport of tough, brave men he proved that he was perhaps the toughest; and he was the bravest.

RIP, Steve.

RIP - very sad news.

Thoughts to his friends and family.

Inspirational that he didn't just accept his illness and fate and finished his life on his terms helping others.

I was very lucky to have met him twice when he was doing his fundraising.

Both times it was a pleasure to see him. He always took time to speak to me.

What a man, what a hero. I really hope the game can find some way to honor him.
