I went to London in 2002, with a list of things to do. Day one was see the Post Office underground railway and then have some fish and chips from a nearby chippy that fried haddock in beef dripping. Unfortunately the train was late and the P O Railway had priority so when we got to the chippy it had closed. Still like to find it next time I go! We did find a pub nearby that sold Fullers London Pride on draught and I'm partial to a drop of that so it wasn't a complete disaster.

Black pudding isn't northern. Neither is chips neither are gravy and the combination of the latter is fairly recent as well as being an abomination

was astonished that people would consider paying more than £3 a pint, these days the family laugh at me for having a posh accent and calling it dinner instead of tea

Know that one very well. I've also noticed when using rude words containing a u I get some abuse from people back home about my accent

Black pudding isn't northern. Neither is chips neither are gravy and the combination of the latter is fairly recent as well as being an abomination

Well I'm in my mid 60's and have had gravy on my chips all my life, so I don't know what you mean by "recent"

As for black pudding being northern, the French do a mean boudin noir.

They also do mean black or blood puddings in the Canaries.

Chips n cheese seems to be relatively recent?

According to Wikipedia chip butties are from up North. For me though you cant beat half rice half chips and curry sauce.

I worked on a site in Coventry around 1988 ish. When the local labourer asked me if I wanted anything from the local chip shop, I asked him to get me a chip butty....

 

"A what?!?"

 

"A chip butty"

 

"What the f***'s a chip butty?"

 

"Chips in a breadcake"

 

"What the f***'s a breadcake?"

 

"A round breadroll cut in half"

 

"Ah, you mean a batch?"

 

"No, I only want one."

 

(We got there in the end.)

Well now you are the city of culture you can start by understanding that cobs, barm cakes, rolls etc ARE all other names fora Batch.

Bludwurst in Germany, Salami de sangue in Italy, Morcilla in Spain.

I read some years ago in an article in the Coventry Bears programme that you were in your 70s.  I can believe that you've eaten chips all your life though.

Spanish morcilla is another take on black pudding. They do different varieties, but the one with rice in the mix is my favourite.

My daughter has chips and salad cream, or preferably mayonnaise. God knows where that came from.

The Belgians serve mayonnaise or garlic mayonnaise with frites. Very nice combo, which I also enjoy from time to time. 

 

Salad cream, however is Beelzebub's sputum.

All introduced to the various countries by the originators of the black pudding, the Romans. Each country now has it's own variation developed over the passing millennia.
