Sam Burgess urged to get under Sonny Bill Williams' skin in World Cup semi-final

LONDON: Sam Burgess has been told to "square up" to Sonny Bill Williams in a bid to put him off his game in this weekend's World Cup semi-final and the England star says he is looking forward to the challenge.

After steamrolling Williams in the New Zealand superstar's NRL comeback at the start of the season, Burgess has been earmarked for what England team-mate Sam Tomkins described as "a massive job to keep him quiet" But former England great Garry Schofield wants Burgess to go further and believes that unless the South Sydney enforcer gets under the skin of Williams the home side will not win.

"If I were [England coach] Steve McNamara, I would detail Sam Burgess to man-mark Williams and follow him everywhere," Schofield said. "Burgess has the physical presence to rattle Williams and wrap him up.

"If Williams is put off his game and starts to square up to Burgess, he could lose focus and neglect his teammates. But if England can't put the shackles on Williams he will cause havoc out wide with clean breaks and those magical passes to his support players.

"If he is kept out of the game as much as possible, England have a chance. If not, we'll come up short again."

Schofield, who is Great Britain's most capped player, described Williams in his Daily Star column as "the game's most outstanding player" and "a freakish talent that only comes along once in a blue moon".

A couple of big hits and then a flair up between SBW  and Sam Burgess would be a good start to the game, not sure if Burgess would come out on top if that happens.

Thanks for sharing, brilliant story. I agree, though - not sure even Sam can match Sonny!

I wouldn't advise a square up!.. Sam should focus on worrying SBW with his own game. Rattle him with some big shots by all means though..

I think a couple of clashes between Sam and SBW will make the game even better.

Burgess does not take a backward step and SBW can throw them they say.

If either Camp have any brains they will have had a strategy discussion after the Aussies leaned on the Organisers to allow for another official in video Refs box before they start anything that will be scrutinized from the zillion camera angles like it's the Kennedy Assassination.

Beware the NRL Official on the grassy Knoll lads !

There will be pressure to suspend players next week if the opportunity presents itself.

You read it here first.

The Australians have been getting the better of the refereeing appointments for 30 years, we shouldn't start worrying about that now.

Its all an Australian conspiracy...................

Must have been when NZ won the WC in 2008 and the four Nations.

Its this that makes this game a joke and loses more fans than it gains.
