Ryan Giggs

16 posts in this topic

Article on BBC, talking to the bloke that discovered Ryan Giggs, few mentions of RL.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25142851

"Even at that age I knew he was an absolute gem. His dad was a class act as a rugby league winger and young Ryan had his speed and balance to swerve past people as though they weren't there

"He was naturally gifted and also played rugby for his school, attracting interest from Wigan and St Helens, who both wanted to sign him

He has always been chatty when the subject is football or, his other favourite sport, rugby league. When he was a kid I never heard him talk about anything else, not even girls."

Well he seemed to make up for that in later life! :D

If you recall the terms of the superinjunction, he was very determined not to talk about girls in later life too.

His dad was a stand-off. SWinton fans loved him but Im not sure if he ever played top flight RL. Maybe one season.

He played stand off, good player, hard as nails. if anybody saw Paul Walsh the Welsh lad who played for Widnes, bit smaller but very similar player.

didn't danny wilson play for wales?

Well he was Welsh, so he probably did. Ryan Giggs was also born in Wales and played his international soccer for them too.

Because the home nations have a mutual agreement on players playing for the country they're living in rather than the one they might commit to.

Danny Wilson played the first half of a First Division game for Widnes at Warrington in March (?) 1977 as an unnamed trialist. I think he played stand off.

He stunk and was subbed at half time although it seems bizarre in retrospect, putting a bloke in a highly competitive top flight fixture in a sport he's never played before and expecting him to do well.

Edit: here's the game. He was replaced at half time by teenager John Myler who was also making his debut.

Danny Wilson was a handy Stand-off for Swinton.  Played for Wales against England at Ebbw Vale or Bridgend about 1983.

The England team in that game was a bit like the England Knights of today.  Barrow's David Cairns played for England that day.

It was televised by BBC Wales or maybe S4C.
