He's received a two year jail sentence for causing actual bodily harm in an assault outside a bar in Sydney in November.

He and his defense are stunned at the jail term despite the fact that he admitted the offense.

Mindst you when you read what he's said to have done in the report I read then it seems justified.

He's not currently registered as an NRL player.

Say he gets 2 years jail. He will probably be out after 9 months. He should then be deported if Australia abides by it's no conviction policy for foreigners who either enter or are in the country.

Even then so, he should at least be made to do a two year course for anger management before he even tries to return to the NRL.

With the NRL hooking up to Government programs such as "Violence  against women" , "drugs and alcohol" programs and women in league programs as well as many others, the game now has more reason to ban these morons who just dont seem to be able to get the message.

He was also the player that pee-peed on Suncorp ground because he could not be bothered to leave the field.

That should have been the wake-up call for the NRL back then.

Anyhow, adding the years up he might be missing from the game, then the hard work required to make a return. He might be lucky to even come back by the age of 28.

Will he be missed? No, he was on the side-lines injured or in the second tier for 2 years.

Makes you wonder how hard the NRL has to work to keep these players off the front page.

Did the incident happen while he was still with the Warriors or had he just signed for Newcastle at the time?

I agree, with the above poster, the blokes an idiot and shouldn't be allowed near the game for a long time.

Announced today that Newcstle have met with him and told him they've sacked him after going through their own proper procedures.

The NRL last month refused to register Packer's contract with the Knights after the league's Integrity Unit investigated the incident.

The club said it would "continue its duty of care to ensure the welfare of Russell's partner and two young children, who relocated to Newcastle last month."

Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett said it was a difficult time for all parties involved.

Thank goodness someone is thinking of Packer's partner and children.

The Warriors booted Russle.

He wasn't played again after he tinkled on the Broncos Turf.

Unfortunate for Newy

The Warriors also submitted a character refference to the NRL which was in of itself said to be enough for them not to register him.

Packer was an influencial figure behind the scenes , towards the end there it sounds the club was keen to part ways.
