Can Italy qualify for the next World Cup?

7 posts in this topic

With the 2014/15 European Shield now doubling up as World Cup qualification games, the scheduling of these matches will be crucial to our chances of reaching the 2017 tournament. In 2011 the qualifers were played over a few weeks in October when the NRL had finished and we were therefore able to call upon our heritage players. With the Shield games traditionally being played in July, August and September (when the NRL is in full flow) this will obviously impact hugely on our selection this time. I'm hoping that a decision on when these fixtures will be played is made as soon as possible to help with our preparations.

Has the qualification process been decided? How many nations have to go through the qualifcation stage?

Automatic qualification is a joke, you should have to earn your place in the tournament. Hopefully everyone other than the hosts and England have to qualify.

Why should England be exempted then?

In a ideal world they shouldn't, but get real, for at least the next two WCs they won't have to. It looks as though there will be three hosts, which already means 3 automatic qualifiers and hopefully there won't be any more than 4. Why do teams with poor domestic leagues deserve automatic qualification?

I was wondering that. So we could have South Africa and England as automatic qualifiers.

The problem with the qualifying process is that it is expensive, and then qualifying teams are changed out of all recognition by including Aussies.

Isn't it the biggest kept secret that the next WC will be hosted by Australia, NZ and PNG? There's no chance of SA getting it next time. Maybe in 12 years or so, but not 2017.

The problem with the qualifying, is that we need have an international federation with balls, rather than just picking and choosing who they want in the WC. How is it too expensive exactly?
