Leigh Miners 12 v 10 Hunslet Warriors

Leigh Miners made a winning start to 2014 on Saturday with a tough 12-10 victory against Premier Division new boys Hunslet Warriors to put them into the hat for the second round of the Tetleys Challenge Cup, Miners producing a strong defensive effort on a wet and windy afternoon at Twist Lane. The first half was a tough one with both teams having an high completion rate in the bad conditions and it took until the twenty minute mark for the first points of the afternoon to be scored, the points going the way of the home side when new signing Kieran Eccleston put second rower Lee Gittins through a gap to score at the side of the posts, Jonny Youds converting to make the score 6-0. Miners where in again a few minutes later when Adam Thomason broke down the right to send in Scott O'Brien under the posts, Youds landing the simple conversion to make it 12-0. Hunslet had their chances in the first half but they could find no way through a strong and determined Miners defence who held firm to take a 12-0 lead into the half time break.

The majority of the second half was played inside the home sides half with Miners trying to play their usual attacking rugby throwing the ball about and with doing that in the bad conditions they was turning the ball over way to cheaply with way to many unforced errors to keep inviting Hunslet to attack their line. The Warriors did just that having good spells of pressure on the Miners line but still was unable to put any points on the board as the home side snuffed out what was thrown at them. Miners did have the odd chance in the Warriors half when they kept hold of the ball long enough to post more points but that came to nothing as they missed at least two chances to put the game beyond Hunslet. The Warriors got on the scoreboard in the final few minutes when they kicked over the top from a scrum to score under the sticks through Danny Rowse, Gary McClelland adding the extras to make it 12-6. From the restart Miners kicked the ball out on the full to invite the visitors straight back into good ball and with them being full of confidence after just scoring they went over again out wide after Nathan Kitson spotted a gap on the blindside to make it 12-10. Luckily for Miners the kick went wide but again from the restart they kicked the ball out on the full and that gave Hunslet one last chance to snatch the game from Miners. Hunslet threw everything at Miners in the last set but where unable to grab a winner as Miners held on to win 12-10.

Miners are in action again on Saturday 15th February when they take on West Hull in the Inaugural NCL Steve Prescott Foundation Charity Shield at Stanningley.
