But wouldn't overworking the games top stars help Penrith?

Club interest vs the country, or the sport as a whole as ever.

why ?

Because we don't play enough international rugby. It's the way forward... If anything the NRL should give up a round for a full international weekend.

The NRL does stop for a weekend so the Aus v NZ Test can be played and, this year, Fiji v Samoa. Its the RFL who, as far as I'm aware, haven't organised a mid season test match for this year.

Having said that, I'd agree with your first point - we don't play enough internationals. I take Ivan Clearys point about players playing too many matches and the effects on performances but, as always with RL, it's the 4 to 6 week International season that takes the blame while the 30 week domestic season is always seen as sacrosanct.

That does not make him an idiot it just shows that anybody thinking that has not even read what he has said, that would be far more idiotic. His concern is for player welfare which seems a perfectly reasonable standpoint as opposed to declaring him an idiot.

At no point have more international RL been played than there has over the last few years. It would be good if you could quantify what is enough because there is not much space in the calandar. Currently the only games that create genuine demand involve the top three teams, you could make a point for France but it does not stand up to scrutiny. RL can go down the route cricket has but that would do more harm than good.

As for NRL giving up a round, this is not possible unless the NRL renegotiates with the broadcasting rights holder  and sponsors. Having internationals during an NRL/SL round would be more workable.

It's amazing how short sighted some people can be. If the players need more rest then the internationals should be held while the NRL/SL are going on as well. In RU they do this all the time... they don't stop their club games on the weekends internationals are on, I don't see why RL couldn't do the same

Could Internationals not be staged during cup weeks?

Obviously not the semi's or final?

This would use weekends when some players are free anyway

It would also handicap the cup to aid the smaller/championship clubs!

I've watched a lot of Ivan over the years, his persona is reserved, taciturn, and he cares about his players. He's not the sort of bloke to shoot his mouth off to the media. In fact he does an irritating impersonation of Wayne Bennett when speaking with the media ( I like when Benny gets grumpy , Ivan is a shadow of the Benny thrill show ).

Cleary's only just had one world cup as an assistant coach, It's a concern that he has taken this angle. His position as part of an International coaching team gives his words more weight.

Well given all the RL talent in Aus, can't they simply have bigger squads? After all the new TV deal should easily cover increasing the player rosters at clubs.

If his main concern is players being over played then limit their appearances.

If any player NRL was limited to, say, 20 matches a year plus rep rugby there wouldn't be a problem. Perhaps they are playing too much club rugby?

Mr Cleary never said this whilst winning his Kiwi caps.

Is this view that of him, Penrith or their head honcho one Phil Gould?

Agree with the suggestion that clubs make the concessions for the greater good.

As for Cleary being influenced by Gould , it's an interesting one. Gould as most are aware is a big personality , opinionated sort of bloke.

A lot of people have commented that Gould is the puppet master at Penrith. I don't know . I'd be interested in hearing Penrith fans point of view in terms of that relationship.

Ivans previous mentor was Former All Blacks coach John Heart. When Ivan left the Warriors , Heart left. Being from the Union model , Heart was a big proponent of Warriors players being released for internationals , Cleary was at that time publicly in support of it.

Cleary lost the core of his squad every time NZ played.

Something has changed his thinking.

Super Rugby (RU) are not on the same weeks as the Rugby Championship, but the second tier games are.  In France and British Isles games do take place during International Weekends but that is a relatively recent thing and came about because the club calendar  could not cope otherwise. Football obviously does have PL games not scheduled for WC/Euro qualifiers. Alternatively do was done in RU and have an agreement for a maximum number of games. All too often players are brought back from injury too early and required surgery is all too often delayed until the off season.

Unfortunately, the maximum number of games per player would be seen, especially in Australia, as diluting the sacred and inviolate club scene.

So what if it's a recent thing? It works, so RL should do the same.

It would certainly provide London Broncos with their best chance of winning a game this year.

Muppet.. honestly if the Aussies don't want to be involved in international RL, let them keep their silly state matches to themselves and we can continue on without them, at least we won't have to put up with their media constantly bagging the international game. They'll soon see just how big they'll be without any international influence, it'll be just like aussie rules and limited in growth.

Without Australia developing and providing international players the international scene would be in a terrible state. When was the last time the RFL tried to arrange a test series anywhere? They have now seemed to have deemed France as not worth the effort playing against if they cannot have a series with NZ/AUS.

That is true. I'm flabbergasted England doesn't play yearly home and away games vs the likes of France, Wales or Italy. IMO there should be a European 4 nations. How are these nations supposed to ever catch up to England and build interest in RL there when they don't even get to play the top side in Europe?!?!

SL will be shortened by 4 weeks due to the removal of 2 teams, use those weekends and a couple of other for European internationals.

April-May would probably be the perfect window for this as there's also no competition for internationals from RU.

Are you joking?

The RFL staged the World Cup in 2013

The RFL staged a European Nations in 2012 as the Aussies and Kiwis wanted the year off.

The RFL staged the Four Nations in 2011.

The RFL staged the Four Nations in 2009

The RFL staged a 3 match Kiwi series in 2007.

What an utterly stupid question!

As for France, the year before the World Cup (where France were involved) they played England twice in a series. Hardly hanging them out to dry.
