Defrauding the government

6 posts in this topic

If you defraud the government of over £10,000 in benefit fraud then you're more likely to go to jail than not.

If you defraud the government of £108.9m in a scam over tagging criminals then you just get told to pay it back.

Surely there must be some criminal offence there somewhere.  The people who will suffer are the shareholders and more than likely the employees of G4S while the company works to fill that black hole in their accounts while the senior management just keep on going.

Not entirely different to the expenses thingy not so long back. "Oh we've finally been caught, best say sorry and pay it back".

There does seem to be a monetary threshold over which fraud seems to stop being a criminal offence (or at all for certain people).

Not just fraud, a self-employed friend of mine went bust and was made to feel like a criminal by his creditors, he owed about £50k. Freddy Laker went down owing umpteen millions and was feted as a national hero

Jail is for the little people.

Isn't there an old saying:  If I owe someone a thousand pounds, I have a problem.  If I owe someone a million pounds, they have a problem!
