Independence for Yorkshire!

OK I may have gone slightly overboard on the title there but...

There's an Interesting opinion piece in the Guardian (sorry JohnM) today

It poses the question, if Cornwall can become a minority afforded the same protections etc as the Welsh and Scottish, then why not Yorkshire? It's certainly got enough of its own cultural identity. Whilst I was never particularly for a regional assembly mostly due to the thought, why do we need another layer of scrounging politicians, which I still hold to, would it be possible for Yorkshire, or even a bigger conglomeration of the northern counties to become more independent.

OK this is probably a bad idea but I'm certainly not happy with the way the UK seems to be heading at the moment certainly from a political stand point.

What are everyone else's thoughts?

The problem is that nobody is going to vote through a change like that so you'll never get a 'mandate' in that sense.  A properly federal set-up though would, I believe, be massively beneficial for the English regions.

Cue loads of people banging on about more layers of bureaucracy ...

If we had an independent Yorkshire we could send all those sponging Welsh people back to where they come from.

There is an excellent case to be made for making regions of England such as Yorkshire more autonomous. Sadly, Simon Jenkins does not make that case. As some of the comments under the blog say, click-bait.

I posted a reply to Weary Rhino.

It wasn't very diplomatic.

You surprise me.

I can guess what it said though. Problem is, you don't understand the Yorkshire sense of humour. Perhaps you should try harder to integrate.

Northern Ireland is smaller both in population and area than Yorkshire. Scotland is certainly smaller in population.  They both have a degree of self government. So why not Yorkshire?
