Callum Phillips

My thoughts from yesterday, once the euphoric dust and alcohol had settled, focused on what I see as a talent in the Town ranks that needs nurtured and not clamped by team tactics.

I have followed Town (violins out please) through thick and thin since 1961 - yes, yes, I'm guilty of a couple of shameful sabbaticals during the years - who isn't?

My first hero was Sol Roper - what a little genius.

Then came the mighty Boxer, his era will remain in my minds eye forever.

In and out - all too quickly- came Howard Burns, but boy could he devastate any defence.

So now, having been back in the fold for a couple of seasons, I really see a player who can match, if not beat, what those excellent number 7's portrayed in a Town shirt.

Yes Callum Phillips'. His contribution yesterday caught my eye, and it's not the first time in a couple of seasons that I've admired his broken field play, and effective distribution. But mostly his sudden insertions of off the cuff guile with pace are what make him a bit special.

Maybe I need to go to 'specsavers', too many refs will be holding up the queue though.

Yet despite my views on this kid a long time 'Townie' - longer serving than me (well he must be he looks so much older),tells me Callum is not keeping to game plans and therefore upsetting the coach.

Wow......maybe game plans didn't exist when Sol/Boxer and HB strutted their stuff?

So please coaching staff don't stifle this young man, he's improving all the time and certainly Workington Town will benefit from his talent in the long term.

And the great thing is that he is still just a novice.   Imagine how good he will be with a little more experience!!!

I also saw James Duerden grow visibly the longer the game went on and again I think we saw yesterday just how good he is going to be.    The future is certainly bright and blue and white.

What would you say his position is ? We heard about all those amateur raps and him playing centre . But must say he looked a very good 13 to me yesterday . Very good alround , and probably a bit of gas as well if given the chance . All three amateur lads earned their stripes yesterday .

James Played at 13 last season for Askam & was joint leading try scorer in NCL 2 & had a huge work rate,

Yes , looks like he has the tools to be a very good 13 , most importantly a fantastic engine and great work rate and toughness . And just when that spot is up for grabs ... One good break for us at last !!!
