Norther Ireland best p4p sports nation in British isles?

41 posts in this topic

After Rory's weekend success at the Open, got me thinking...is Northern Ireland (my home...tho I'd prefer it to be united Ireland) the best sports nation p4p in the British isles?

Football; George Best - genius, greatest player ever from these isles and the only one tagged a genius.

Snooker; Alex Higgins - most entertaining player ever, made snooker popular, wouldn't be on tv without him.

Golf; Rory McIlroy - first European to win 3 different majors, joined Nicklaus and Woods to win 3 by age 25.

Horse Racing; Tony McCoy - most successful jockey ever, rewriting the record books.

Boxing; Barry McGuigan - highest ever tv audience for his 1985 world title winning fight.

Rugby Union - Willie John McBride - widely regarded as the greates British & Irish Lions player ever.

That's six sports with someone from here being top dog.

Notable mention

Dennis Taylor - 1985 black ball final, most viewed snooker match ever

Not bad for a wee country eh?

Can the others make a claim for the title for best p4p sports nation?

Yes Clones Cyclone...very observant. McGuigan's identity was the north, old man from Belfast, fought most of his fights in the Kings Hall, Belfast, "Danny Boy" was his ring song...and spoke of how he brought two communities together during the troubles.

Breaking it down to counties. Not a bad shout that...did very well in the last Olympics I recall. Who though are the big names from Yorkshire in different sports?

northern ireland isn't a country

suggest you check out Yorkshire's 2012 olympic medal tally against many of the countries in the Olympics. Yorkshire finished twelfth overall

these big names, do you mean current ones or throughout history?

Not forgetting Martin McCague.

Had to google him...cricket is as big here as sumo wrestling.

Just on this...talksport (and the beeb) must forget that Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales exist given the excessive coverage they give to cricket. Yes England is 50 odd million so some coverage is understandable...but way too much.

NI isn't a country? (for personal reasons I tend to agree as its a manufactured state created during the partition of Ireland)

Yep I recall now well Yorkshire did, Yorkshire folk made sure everyone was aware of it!

Big names throughout history.

Know zilch about cricket...Is Botham from Yorkshire?

Ireland have a decent cricket team usually make it to the world cup. They are pushing for test match status they are probably next in line. Scotland have are one of the better associate counties. Wales don't have a team as such but test matches are played there.

Maybe by Irish people. No doubt he was a great player but I suspect most of the home nations would happily put forward their own nomination for that title.

The OP has one huge omission - Joey Dunlop!

Not my opinion..I've never seen him play and I only know of his standing in the game by the views of folk from across the water. There is no more iconic Lion than Willie John McBride. He led the greatest team ever and the players speak of him in reverence. Best player? (which I maybe should have clarified). Different subject...for me it's either Gareth Edwards or JPR Williams.

From your list it would appear that it was indeed the premier sporting nation but certainly not in this century.

If it was going to be a truly great Olympics they would not allowed anyone not from yorkshire to enter, for any country. In fact only allow Yorkshire to compete. Should have been hosted in Yorkshire with a bidding process held between the yorkshire towns.

Same with most world events. Take the 2022 world cup controversy in Qatar. Would there be any of those questions had they awarded the world cup to Yorkshire? No. Its all problems because FIFA is run by people not from Yorkshire.

Yes and no. He wasn't born in Yorkshire but his family were from Yorkshire and he has spent much of his life living in Yorkshire.

The government say that along with E, S and W, it is a constituent country. I'm not sure who is better qualified to determine its status than they are.

Seems to be quite a selective list tbf.

I lived in N Ireland and wouldn't say it is more sporty than England.

They gave Northern Ireland the same status as Scotland and Wales and actually more than England so it's a real thing rather than just someone's opinion.
