Karmichael Hunt has been charged with drug possession, after allegedly being caught by police with cocaine on a Brisbane roadside.

It is understood Hunt, 31, was arrested with another man about 12.40am today in McLachlan St, Fortitude Valley.

His high-profile lawyer Adam Magill confirmed an incident this morning and that his client was arrested.

“An incident involving Karmichael Hunt occurred which resulted in his arrest,” he said.

“At this stage no further instructions have been taken.

“There were two males involved and there has been a subsequent charge of possession. They have been charged conjointly.”

A police spokesman confirmed a 31-year-old man had been charged with two counts of drug possession.

Police will allege the men were on the side of the road on McLachlan St.

They were approached after acting suspiciously.

The men were detained, searched and released within the hour. They were both given a notice to appear.

Hunt’s court date has been scheduled for January 29.

The other man, 32, was charged with possession of a thing used in regards to a drug offence.

The charge is in relation to a mobile phone.

Hunt’s neighbours in the Brisbane suburb of Hendra were unaware of his alleged impropriety.

“He’s a very silly boy,” one said.

“It’s a shame. He’s such a great player.”

Family and friends have arrived at the Hunt residence.

It’s not the first time Hunt, a former NRL and AFL player, has been in trouble for drug offences.

He was fined in March 2015 after pleading guilty to four counts of possessing cocaine.

South Sydney Rabbitohs back-rower Angus Crichton has undergone surgery to amputate his finger in a bid to be fit for the start of the 2018 season.

Crichton ruptured a tendon in the middle finger of his left hand and has troubled him ever since.

It’s an injury that’s plagued the 21-year-old since his time in the NRL’s U20’s competition.

Souths general manager Shane Richardson confirmed Crichton’s upcoming surgery on Thursday morning.

“He’s had it partially amputated. He’s had a problem with that finger for three years now so he needed to do something about it,” 

“He has had four operations and reconstructions on it and made the choice himself, in discussion with the medical team.”

Sydney Roosters have announced that captain Jake Friend has signed a two-year extension to remain with the Tricolours until at least the end of the 2020 season.

Manly’s salary cap investigation could cost them a halves partner for Daly Cherry-Evans for a second time as the NRL awaits the club’s response to the breach notice issued early last month.

According to reports Manly has a contract ready to offer current Newcastle half Trent Hodkinson but won’t be allowed to proceed until the NRL is satisfied that their salary cap dramas have been sufficiently resolved.

The Sea Eagles asked for and were granted an extension to the standard five-day appeal process after the breach notice was issued on December 11 and have until the end of January to file their submission.

Until that happens and the NRL Integrity Unit is able to complete its investigation it is unlikely any new contracts will be registered, putting not only the Hodkinson deal but also the one trumpeted to bring former Dragon Joel Thompson to the club in some doubt.

Kevin Roberts is being remembered as one of rugby league’s greatest referees after his death aged 76. Nicknamed ‘Bilko’, Roberts oversaw 272 first-grade matches including three straight grand finals from 1983.

The Sydneysider, who represented South Sydney in his playing days, he represented South Sydney in 13 first-grade games (1960-62 and 1964-65) & also refereed six State of Origin clashes and four Tests in the 1980s.

“Refereeing lost one of its finest last night,” NRL referees boss Tony Archer said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Kevin’s on-field achievements were outstanding, but it was his support of others which stood him out from the rest.

“He always displayed a strong discipline — no doubt a quality from his policing days — and instilled that as a requirement in all young aspiring referees.” Roberts, who made his first grade debut in 1975, was a NSW Referees Association life member.

“Kevin was a long serving coach and mentor who had a positive impact on so many referees’ careers,” the association said on its website.

I know he said he wouldn't play on if he didn't feel he could do a good job.

Veteran Wigan Warriors hooker Michael McIlorum has agreed to a two-year deal with Catalans Dragons.

The 29-year-old, who starred for Ireland at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, had been linked with a possible move to Canberra.

 Young Newcastle halfback Jack Cogger is almost certainly headed to Belmore but Knights coach Nathan Brown has reaffirmed the club’s stance that he won’t be released a year early from his contract in order to partner Kieran Foran at the Bulldogs scrumbase.

Cogger was among the returning Knights players who resumed pre-season training on Thursday where speculation regarding his future and that of five-eighth Brock Lamb was a hot topic of conversation.

The recruitment of Roosters pair Mitchell Pearce and Connor Watson in the off-season has put significant roadblocks in the way of two 20-year-old halves that the club has brought through their junior representative system and Brown knows it is unlikely they will be able to keep both.

Cogger, who was captain of the New South Wales under-20s team in 2016 coached by new Bulldogs head coach Dean Pay and has played eight NRL games over the past two seasons, is reportedly close to signing off on a two-year deal to join Canterbury in 2019 but Brown was adamant any move to entice him to Sydney a year earlier would fall on deaf ears.

Nikorima, who is expected to partner Anthony Milford in the halves in round one, started to feel abdominal pain while on holiday but sought medical attention when he returned home.

It wasn’t ideal timing for the youngster who needed a shoulder reconstruction this time last year.

Ava Seumanufagai has moved to the Sutherland Shire on a two-year deal, and according to coach Shane Flanagan, is set to improve a heap after increasing his leg work at training.

“Ava has been really good. He hadn’t done a lot of the training that we do so it’s all new to him,” Flanagan told the Sharks website.

“He hasn’t done a lot of leg work in the gym (previously) so I think we’re going to see some real benefits from that. He’s going to be big and strong at the line.

“He’s got a really big motor and can play good minutes.

Appendicitis? Well, that kept Luke Gale out of RL for nearly two weeks last season.

A Christmas Eve outing at the beach became something much more serious for Melbourne Storm youngster Harry Grant recently.

Grant and his father were at Oxley Beach in Port Macquarie, NSW when they spotted two women struggling in the surf.

 

The Storm rookie - who was last year’s RLPA Under 20s player of the season - was quick to react, racing into the water to help the pair.

According to Port News, Grant swam the first woman back to shore while the second lady made her way back out of the water safely.

“As soon as it was obvious that no-one else was going to help, Harry jumped into the water and swam out to help,” Grant’s father told Port News.

“Thankfully it was all over within a matter of minutes but it could have had some really bad consequences if no-one had stepped in to help,” Mr Grant said.

Greg Inglis is set to make a full-time switch to the centres for South Sydney.

As we know, he's been a fullback for 7 years His role at No 1 is rumoured will end this year with him returning to the position which saw him rise to fame in.

Returning from the injury that sidelined him from round one last year, Inglis has spent the summer training at centre with Alex Johnston moved to fullback.

New coach Anthony Siebold will make the positional call in a bid to extend Inglis’ career.

Penrith coach Anthony Griffin has allayed concerns Tyrone Peachey could be headed to Gold Coast, declaring the versatile star is key to the Panthers’ upcoming NRL season.

Peachey has recently been linked with a move to the Titans despite having a further two years left on an extension announced back in 2016.

The 26-year-old’s management is reported to have already initiated talks with the Titans, who will this year be coached by former Panthers assistant mentor Garth Brennan.

Brennan this week denied the club had held talks with Peachey, citing contract rules that prevent clubs from negotiating with players who have more than one year left on their deal.
