roughyed34
Out of interest, how much does it matter about a name? In terms of supporters of various clubs, ask a Swinton fan who they support, they tell you Swinton- not Lions,Wigan would say Wigan not Warriors etc. Obvs the exceptions are Leeds and Bradford mainly. Ask a Warrington fan and i suspect some will say Wires still.Warringtons badge although they are Wolves still has The Wire on it too as a nod to the history. We at Oldham use both Roughyeds and Oldham in the songs and chants. Never once when we were Bears did i ever hear a song/chant referencing the Bears,it was still Roughyeds.I would prefer to stay plain old boring Oldham RLFC,once we did have Red Ed the Roughyed as a mascot im not entirely sure (although he does a great job) what the lion mascot has to do with us as a club,we certainly aint Oldham Lions are we? Its interesting to see peoples opinions and suggestions for names etc,one of the best threads on here fo a while this one.
AL FALL
Would FELT HATS be pushing it a bit? NO offence to any other clubs.
moorside roughyed
Oldham bears sounded shocking. I prefer just Oldham or the roughyeds.
Stevos Barber
Personally I like the whole link with Sapere Aude....Dare to be Wise....Wise Owl. The whole point of the (contrived) nicknames was to have something marketable as cuddly toys etc and as a mascot to walk around the pitch to gee the crowd up. Ollie the Owl in hoops sounds like a goer to me. If I was a clever clogs like a certain Computer wizard on here I'd mock something up but I'll just throw the idea to Dave

roughyed34
See the problem with Owls is Latics have it covered with Chaddy the owl,i guess we could have the same but as Dave said earlier i think that the owl although an Oldham thing is linked both to the mascot and badge of OAFC. Maybe we should think outside the box, any terms maybe relating to cotton, iron, engineering all of which Oldham is famous for. I aint come up with any yet lol that fit for us. From wikipedia....Chaddy the Owl is the official mascot of Oldham Athletic—an association football club in Oldham, in Lancashire, England. He was chosen as the official mascot of Oldham Athletic to reflect Oldham's historic heraldry and heritage, as the owl is a prominent feature on the Oldham coat of arms. Potentially a problem with Latics if Oldham RLFC used a form of this? Not trying to put the mockers on anything at all, maybe a different kind of owl for us or something might solve it. I dont see why some marketing/graphics genius etc cant find a representation of a Roughyed anyway, like i say it was done before with Red Ed. It doesnt have to be "human" form, just have a rough head haha. I love this thread, the input from everyone is great!
Dave Naylor
The thing about Roughyed is where to go with it. Roughyed doesn't mean Roughyan but it's tempting to go down a well trodden path of depicting some hybrid roughyed/yan shirt wearing tough-nut. Thing is I personally don't buy into it. I wouldn't really want to spanner in some tough animal just for marketing purposes but without doing so leaves you a little bit short of inspiration. It's no wonder we've stuck with the town crest so long. The town was built on the back of the cotton industry but I don't really know what to do with that. I've tried to think of the names of Oldham Mills for inspiration. My mum worked at Majestic Mill in Waterhead: Oldham Majestics, nah, doesn't work, sounds like an IPL team. Oldham Herons. What!?! One night I'll be wide awake at 4am and it'll come to me in a waking dream

roughyed34
]Just a question, if anyone used an image/name ie. Owl,Griffin etc and attached it to the Oldham RLFC name/badge used by ORLFC 1997 would Hamilton have the right to say you cant use it in reference to the club (even as an independant web site etc) as officially (well in his eyes,i dont know if you have to register a nickname with the rfl or anything) we are nicknamed Roughyeds? I always feel like im knocking everyones effort but im not, honestly! Just trying to put it out there as we all know what Hamilton thinks of independants, wether supporters clubs or anything else he dont have control of. Just done a quick google search for images of a Rough Head ha, could something along these lines work as a Roughyed, obvs with a rugby ball instead of a lacrosse stick and the name changes etc, wears a hat which is what Roughyed is based on? Stevos Barber
I was going to pose that what kind of hat question too. I can see why Gryphons are popular but assuming this was to be the identity I rather think a Gryphon costume for the mascot might be problematical and even scarier than ThreadBear. Besides with those wings the poor lad could end up flying over into Yorkieland on a windy day. And I guess that were someone to try to source a (base) cuddly toy owls would be easier to find
HARRYRUBY
We could have a tawny owl with a rough cap on his head as a mascot dressed in the home or away shirt dependent on where we are playing the match.
SINGE
Really like thinboys griffins. But can see the more obviously simpler Rough Head. Tawny Owl in a hat ior Rough Head in owl face might work Is a Snowy Owl completely out of the question or does it have inks elsewhere, It could even have red in it?
