Junior Kangaroos v Junior Kiwis - 7 May 2016 @ Parramatta

Recommended Posts

This game will be played as the curtain-raiser to the Pacific double-header. Since 2010, this is an Under 20s Test. Before then it was U19s. Last year OZ won 22-20 and the year before NZ won 15-14

Teams should be announced Sunday or Monday after this week's NYC Round. This will be televised in OZ on Fox Sport 501 from 3pm.

Are their any players that could potentially be named by both countries??

I guess there would be quite a few. Even Nathan Cleary, son of Ivan, a possible 6 or 7 for OZ, would have lived in NZ long enough to qualify. The Kiwis had much the same team in 2014 and 2015 so those guys would all be too old now. OZ team? Jayden Nikorima played for OZ last year but he moved to Qld as a 10-year-old.

Other OZ players from last year are already in NRL so probably won't play: Brenko Lee, Joe Ofahengahue, Valentine Holmes, Ash Taylor, Tepai Moeroa.

I can remember a tug of war over moeroa and Holmes quite recently but with a large kiwi expat community living in oz there's always going to be young players that qualify for both countries.

And children of mixed ethnicities and mixed nationalities.

National Anthem time, none of the players seem to know the words.

Background music at stadium sounds great, except it's Kashmir by Zeps. Erm, people running this, you do realise this is Under 20s? Kashmir was released 40 years ago.

Penalty kick from Lachlan Croker doesn't find touch.

Trivia for trainspotters: Lachlan Croker played his early junior RL with Crookwell Green Devils. Crookwell was well-known for it's turntable, now in disrepair:

The crowd is so small that the sideline commentator had to go up into the stand to retrieve the ball after a penalty kick.

Still 0-0 after 10mins. OZ maybe on top by 1-2%

11min: Wests Tiger JJ Felise barges over from 10m out for the J Roos. OZ 6-0

GLasD will be disappointed to miss this. The grass is spectacular and the chalk lines are some of the straightest and whitest I've ever seen.

Now there is a fire in Parramatta after the day started with a lot of smoke haze from hazard-reduction burning in the Blue Mountains.

29min: try to Ken Tofilau (Knights) for Kiwis. Abbey misses the kick from sideline. OZ 10-4

That was one of the first times the NZers got down that end and it only took 3 tackles to score.

34min: try to Ata Hingano (NZ Warriors) misses kick. OZ still lead 10-8

No bunker in International Rules but they can use the old coal-fired, analog video ref. There was a delay there while they waited for the film to come back from developing.

HT: Roos 10-8

Kiwis definitely owned that last 10 minutes, directly correlating to Nathaniel Roache coming off the bench at dummy half.

I said it was hazy earlier

I dunno what was burning in Parra. The ABC never goes west of Glebe unless they want to do a story about domestic violence or oppressed lesbians.

66min: try to Isaako chalked off for obstruction. Unlucky - not the usual runner taking defender out of the line. Dummy runner went through the line - all legit - but then the play went back to where he was standing, offside, and he was in the way.
