As a youngster, I had quite a crush on Lucy Deakins, who played local lass Cammie in 'The Great Outdoors'. But, that aside, it is a proper Candy/Aykroyd broad comedy that hits the spot just right for a Saturday night.

Das Boot, stunningly realistic.

Jurgen Prochnow - magnificent! And the whole thing, whether the movie or the TV miniseries that they made as an extended cut, is a tough and unflinching take on war films.

And, talking of German films about WW2, 'Downfall' is a masterpiece.

the vikings

I've always rooted for Kirk in this.

Beautiful scenery too (and no, I'm not referring to Janet Leigh)

The Odessa file

What a bloody good movie.

Thanks all for the massive input!  This should keep me going till Christmas.  I will start at the top and work through the list.  I have obviously and shamefully missed some real classics.  Will report back on my favourites.  Thanks again :thankyou:

In the blink of an eye it could all be taken away.  Be grateful always.

I don't watch many films these days, but I could watch these again.

The Third Man. - Simply brilliant.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly; For A Few Dollars More; A Fistful Of Dollars. - Moody, atmospheric and the music is great, too.

Changeling. - Based on a true story, a disturbing look at a truly corrupt police force and the lengths it will go to in order to cover its tracks.

The Two Faces Of January. - The book is better, but I am a sucker for the Crete connection, so I overlook the film's minor shortcomings.
