Keighley Cougars can this evening announce the signing of Matty Beharrell from the Swinton Lions.

An exciting young half back, Beharrell arrives at Cougar Park following just a sole season at Heywood Road in which he helped the Lions defy all pre-season predicitions by avoiding relegation back to League One as John Duffy’s side narrowly missed out on a place in the Championship Shield Semi-Finals.

Beginning his career with Hull Kingston Rovers, Beharrell did feature in the Super League for the Rovers as they fell to a 84-6 defeat away at Wigan but spent the majority of his time at the KC Lightstream Stadium on Dual-Registration with the Newcastle Thunder, despite winning the Under-18’s Man of Steel with KR, before making a permanent switch to the club for the 2015 season.

Whilst in the North-East, a string of impressive performances for the club, then coached by Stanley Gene, saw Beharrell a member of the 2014 League One Team of the Year before being crowned the divisions Young Player of the Year in 2015.

Standing at just 5 feet and 4 inches, Beharrell’s sole appearance at the top level saw him claim an unususal record as he replaced Rob Burrow as the smallest player to feature in the Super League.
