The Future is League

Josh Hodgson to captain Canberra Raiders.

Be interesting to see how he takes to this, shows how much esteem he's held in by the club. Graham is the only other one I can remember being a captain of an Aussie side, though I seem to remember an English player captaining Balmain i think.

Maybe Morley at Roosters. Keith Barnes was Balmain captain and Welsh but only ever played in OZ. When Hanley was there Wayne Pearce was captain. Ellery Hanley captained Wests Magpies for 11 games in 1989.

Tommy Bishop was captain/coach of Cronulla in the early Seventies.

Did Mal Reilly captain Manly at any point?

Their trial game against Newcastle is currently being livestreamed from a link on raiders.com.au

It's at their old ground across the border in NSW.

Is that number 3 Jordan Turner? All the English lads playing if so.

Edit: it is and they are

Stevo was player-coach for a short period at Penrith, but did he captain the team?

Hanley and Schoey both played at Balmain and Wests.

When Reilly started at Manly Fred Jones, the hooker would have been the captain but maybe Fred was injured because Reilly was the captain the in the first week of finals in 1974. This probably would have made Tommy Bishop in 1970 the first Englishman to Captain an OZ club. Dick Huddart was the first to win a GF but he was at St George when they had Provan, Gasnier, Raper, so he wouldn't have been Captain.

Lee Crooks captained Wests Magpies for a few games in 1986, probably while Ian Schubert was injured. Like Hanley and Schofields, Crooks also played for Balmain and Wests.

44-0 to the Knights today is not a great start.

A strange foreshadowing of the merger, a few years later.
